Instinctive shooting
I began bowhunting 100 yrs. ago with an American Archery 49 lb. recurve. Since the early 80s I've hunted with a compound. I recently resurrected my recurve and would like to become fairly proficient with it. I never was very accurate with it and didn't have any system for shooting instinctively. Any suggestions on techniques? Thanks.

RE: Instinctive shooting
Same anchor point,Push forward with your brace hand and release with back tension. Cant a bit, if you like. I always have had to cant. Keep both eyes open and focus on target until arrow hits. Figure out which you like best, three fingers under or split fingers. If your bow is not tillered for three fingers under, simply raise the knock a bit. Figure out if you like to anchor high and look down the arrow, or anchor low. I anchor low. These are the first things that come to my mind. Practice, Practice, practice.;)

I'd suggest getting some videos/dvd and see how other do it. Byron Ferguson, John Schulz, Rick Welch, Bob Brunner, Bob Wesley, Masters of the Barebow Volume I and II are good places to start.
Other then that - practice as often as possible. |
RE: Instinctive shooting
I particularly like Byron Ferguson's method. Grab his book "Become the Arrow" for starters. Haven't seen the vids that Bobco recommends, but I'm sure they're good. I've heard good things about the Schulz and Welch videos, especially.

RE: Instinctive shooting
Well all I will say is find what is comfortable with you and challenge yourself every shot. I have a foam target with 4 inch circles. I fire two arrows one at different tagets retrieve and the follow up with 2 more at remaining targets. I do this at different ranges. Not saying its the best way but I can hit fairly consistently.

RE: Instinctive shooting
shoot the same way every single time - thats the key
there are no two archers who shoot the same, but the ones who shoot THEIR same way everyshot are always good shooters |
