Any primitive archers out there?
I'd love to hit the woods with a handmade hickory longbow, cedar arrows, and flint broadheads. Anyone else?

RE: Any primitive archers out there?
Actually, one of my goals as a bowhunters was to take a deer with a bow I made myself. On 10-28-00 I did that, with a small doe in WI.
Some day I'd like to "step it up a notch" and take one off the ground, without camo, and with primitive gear (selfbow and a flint head). JRW |

As a matter of fact I just began working on my first selfbow and indeed, it is hickory. Hopefully it won't break and I'll harvest with it next season!

My wife says I'm pretty durned primitive, and I'm an archer, so I guess I'm a primitive archer. :)
Actually, I do get a wild hair and hack out a selfbow from time to time. It's a lot more productive way to spend my time than watching TV. |

Arthur, are there any good resources out there to learn to make a primitive bow? I'd love to learn.

Tim's advise is good. I've read all three TBB's and learned a lot from them. Also, I'd suggest Dean Torges' book "Hunting The Osage Bow".

The "Traditional Bowyer's Bible" series are great, as suggested. Here's a couple more sources which I've found very helpful; one is "The Bent Stick" by Paul Comstock and also one of the videos by Murray Gaskins. You can purchase these from Murray's site and he'll also sell you a stave.

I've made many selfbows, with my first being Hickory. I hunted this past season with a snake skin backed Osage bow that I started for my Dad, but he unfortunately passed away before I could give it to him. I'm working on a snakey Osage character bow now. I make laminated bows too, but selfbows are my favorite to make and hunt with. All the books mentioned are great and I definitely recommend them. It's also nice if you can find someone to show you the ropes on your first one.
