The "Perfect" Quiver
Ok, I have read in several of the posts that the "perfect" quiver is being sought by several of us. I personally do not like anything attached to my bow while hunting, but would be willing to carry a quiver on my bow while getting to a treestand/ground blind. I do not like the hip quivers that leave your arrows hanging out for the whole world to snag on to your arrows, and a back quiver seems a little hard for me to get an arrow out of when needed, without taking it off.
So, we are left with the question. What would be considered the "best" all around quiver? Is it something that we can make, to get the best of all worlds, or will we have to "settle" for the lesser of two evils? Does anyone have plans for building an easily transportable, snag-free, non-cumbersome, easy access quiver for bowhunting? If you do, please send me a copy of your plans, Im in the market for one. |

Quivers are dear to my heart! I have a bunch of them and use them all on different occasions. A single, best, all arounder? Gee Whiz! That's hard to answer. If you mostly carry broadheads, probably a side stalker from Jack's Archery. If you small game hunt also, take a look at Steve Catts Sidekick. Lonewolf archery has a hip pocket quiver that rides the feathers below your back. It is dandy for stalking in open country....... Your life is made of time, not money. |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Kip,
It sounds like you and I share the same opinion about bowquivers. I LOVe them while I'm on the move, but HATE them when I'm staying put (like on stand). I usually drill the riser and use a Kwikee Kwiver, which fits the bill nicely. When I got my new Palmer a week and a half ago there were no inserts...and I wasn't drilling this bow. I needed to find a bowquiver that I could take off when I get on stand, and hang up next to me. Most bowquivers for recurves & longbows are two piece designs, which eliminates them as a possibility. That left the Great Northen quick detach (NOT the strap-on), or the German Ridge. Both are good, but I went with the Great Northen, since it's lighter in weight. To say the least, I'm VERY impressed with it. Just loosen two thumb screws and it comes right off...in one piece. JRW |

RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
For those of you that use the Side Stalker, what's the difference between the standard Stalker and the Chief?

RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Ok, you got me curious, where do I find the Jacks quiver? I have seen the Great Northern,(looks promising) but cant find the Jacks.

I bought mine from Dean Torges. He has a website. I like his model, because it is a little larger and has a place for a file. Brian> They are clones, but the Jack's is a little more adjustable(to me) has a wooden piece in the bottom, and easily replaceable foam. Other than that, they look the same. Jack's archery did the sewing on the original sidestalkers Your life is made of time, not money. |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Dean and one of the St Charles boys sells them. They show up used from time to time on women-outdoors classifieds. Thats where I picked mine up.
I just liked how the chief looked. A little more rugged compared to the other 2 he has. I have played with using it as a backquiver and it really dont compare. As a hunting quiver though, nothing comes close. I would like to add a bit to it. A knive sheet would be nice. I dont understand the extra flap of leather he has on there at the opening. Dean T and Jay Campbell were up here 2 yrs ago now and I had the chance to spend a couple days in camp with them. Jay had the raptor, Dean had the chief. I can tell you the difference's between the two there. I also bought a raptor for a buddy one year for xmas. The chief is much more simple buy yet it looks and so far has been, much more rugged. Something I need! I have also done something funky with a great northern. Took the straps off and used some 550 cord and wore it like Jacks quiver or the raptor. IT works great and has NO weight. It however doesnt have anything for protection. I used it on my caribou hunt in 00 and it worked great. A partner of mine used a old bear quiver, typical compound quiver with a few holes drilled with a piece of 550 parachute cord and it also worked great. You can find some pretty dang cheap quivers around too if you wanted to go this route instead of using the GN quiver, or double for the Chief. If ya need pics I can post my caribou link...if ya need more I can get some digitals.... |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Hey Lil, I cant find the link to your photo/website. Can you post it again so I can have a look-see at the Jacks? Thanks.

RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
the only down side of this type of side quiver, is that they are slower on the second shot.

RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
I have a Raptor side quiver. I like it for still hunting but hate it for 3-D shooting. It's a pain to load arrows. I have a side quiver from Art Vincent for 3-D and love it. No good for hunting though. I have a German Ridge bow quiver love it for carrying arrows out to the tree stand. Hate it when I have to shoot with it on the bow. Perfect quiver? I'm still looking. Sort of like looking for the fountain of youth or the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Dick

I too would like to get a look at your 550 rig Lil. 550 being the duct tape of the military.

RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
I agree there is no perfect quiver for ALL needs. The Selways work well enough, but can be a bit bulky from a traditional standpoint. I use 'em though.
I never did get the hang of back quivers for serious hunting. They sure look good and carry well however. Side quivers can be effective... if you learn how to move through brush with them. They require too much attention for my taste. If you don't mind drilling a couple of holes in your riser and placing a couple of bushings, the Kwikee Kwiver is hard to beat. You can carry it on the bow and take it off at will, plus you can buy quivers whcih hold as few as three or as many as 6-8 arrows. The Kwikee is about as close to an "all-around" a quiver as you can get. The Great Northern is second to none, wraps snugly to your riser and is trim looking on most bows. I don't own a GN, but wish I did! If I HAD to have one quiver only, it would probably be the Kwikee, but the one I use the most is my Selway 4 arrow bow quiver with a rawhide cover (for asthetics of course :) ) even though I prefer to shoot a bow without a quiver. Ground hunting is my usual tactic and there is something to be said for having your "weapon" and "ammunition" in one package. YBIC, Dave ><> Matt 6:33,34/Rev 3:20 |

My sheep and moose pics have the Chief in it. I am not wearing it though. Here is the link http://community.webshots.com/user/lilhunter007 Tower, 550 cord is Parachute cord. 7 strand nylond covered 550pounds breaking strength. If you get the 5 strand its 350 if I remember right. 100 mile tape is what you are thinking duct tape. I'll have to get a picture for you tomorrow nite with the Gn and 550 cord set up. Basically its just tied onto both strap mounts and also to a spot on the main metal rod going front to back to hold it in the right position on my side and it sits just like my Chief. |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Dang it Lil, every time I go to your photo album, I want to start packing to head to Alaska. You are truely blessed to be able to enjoy that every day.
I like the looks of the quiver, but here is my stupid question. What is the "extension" of the tube horizonally? An accessory pouch? And, there must be some sort of foam in the bottom to keep your broadheads from bangin' around in it? I want to make a quiver that would be similar to the one you have, but I have to figure out how I can protect the broadheads from tearing up everything in the bottom of the quiver. Im thinking foam or something along those lines. Edited by - Kip on 01/21/2003 12:41:10 |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Lil, I was speaking in riddles. I am well aware of 550 cord, it is a mainstay for keeping track of all sorts of my military equipment. We used to tie a length of it to each of our belt and rucksack accessories as well as use it for boot laces. As an infantry scout we never ran out of uses for the cord, usually we ran out of it! What I had ment to say was I have used it more than I have 100 mile hour tape, not that we don't use the dickens out of that commodity as well. I will be looking forward to the pic's. Thanks,
Vern Pratt P.S. I no longer tread the night, I am now a military police NCO. To know the answers just listen for his word. God bless you all. |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
Kip,
Its a fleece pouch attached with a nylon strech cord that goes over the end of your arrows. And yes there is a hunk of foam down in the bottom. You pull it out for 3/target shooting. I prefer a backquiver for 3ds or targets and small game hunting. Jay Campbell has a deal in the upper section (towards the feathers) that holds the arrows away from eachother. A hunk of foam with slits cut it in if I remember right. I like the idea, just havent done it yet. Dean Torges's page has some good info on the chief and some great pictures. Some of which I believe he is actually wearing his in the photo album section. As for the hunting, your dang skippy! If you get the urge, let me know! Caribou, moose, sitka deer, or black bear, its all fair game for ya. If I cant go I can atleast help steer ya in the right direction! Tower, Sorry to insult your intelligence. I guess I wasnt much for a morse code operator ! Been busy twisting and doing honey do's just thought I'd drop in...we are going to get them tonite before we hit the rack. I'll have the posted in the Am. Sorry for the delay! |
RE: The "Perfect" Quiver
No insult taken Lil', I just didn't want you thinking I was a Army wanna be trying to impress others. Still would shake your hand and swap stories with you around any comp fire.
