Shooting in a string??????
All my bows have new LBR strings, Flemish, Dynaflight 97 (Chad how many strands?). No I'm not employeed by Chad, just like consistency and a quality product. Okay Chad send out those free strings <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>. Only kidding..lol. I've noticed that the strings seem to settle in after about 20 to 30 shots and then I no longer have to adjust the brace height. Is this about right? Being the beginer I am I'm trying to get each bow set up at it's sweet spot, and want to know when to stop screwing with the string. My Crusader is set, just shot the nocks off a couple of arrows. Bummer is I have to go out and buy some more!

RE: Shooting in a string??????
14 strands, but you have one coming (for that bow with the shallow string grooves) that is only 12 strands. How many shots to get one settled in depends on the material, type string, bow weight, and who made it--about any of them will be shot in by 50-100 shots though. Dacron can draw up some if you unstring your bow though, and may continue to stretch for a good while. I have a jig I use to pre-stretch mine, but it still takes some shooting to get all the slack out.

Chad,
You prestretch the DF-97 strings you sell? I know there are some manufacturers of strings and cables for compounds that do that. I had not even given any thought to trad strings being prestretched, but it is a great idea! Bill Praise the Lord, He is worthy |
RE: Shooting in a string??????
Yep--I forget where I got the idea for the jig (saw one somewhere), and my main intent at the time was to just have something to hold the string taut so I could put a serving on (which was basically what the one I saw did), instead of trying to keep umpteen different bow lengths on hand. Little wheels started turning, and I got with one of the maintenence men where I used to work, and we (he) had a jig put together before my 12 hr shift was over. That first one did ok, but since then I have improved the design to be a little more sturdy and adjustable. Nothing fancy, but does the trick--I can put enough tension on the string to bow some 1 3/4 square steel tubing. Even with this, it still requires some shooting to get all of the slack out of the twists--just not as much. If anyone wants the specs, just let me know and I will see if I can write down some legible plans. One thing to remember though--dacron strings will stretch like crazy, but will shrink back up--kinda' tricky doing those.

RE: Shooting in a string??????
With endless Dyna97 strings they're pretty much settled in after a dozen or so shots. Maybe less.

RE: Shooting in a string??????
I was wondering about endless--I knew they took less time to settle in, but didn't know how much. Handy information in case I ever loose my mind and start using endless strings. <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Shooting in a string??????
Chad,
In all honesty, I make my endless strings to exactly fit a particular bow. What I want when I'm done is a a top loop that is snug enough that you don't need a string keeper when it's unstrung, and the brace height is dead on without having to twist the string. Sometimes it takes me two or three tries to get it just right for a new bow. After that, the jig gets marked and I can just "crank them out". If a person were to make a "one size fits all" endless string that required a lot of twisting to get right, it'd probably take the same amount of time to settle in as a flemish would. JRW |
