Draw Length Question - longbow vs compound
#1

My question is, is your draw length different on a longbow or recurve than it is on a compound.
It seems like most people shooting trad have shorter draw lengths than those shooting compound, but it may be my imagination.
I have a compound, and my dl is 28.
I am about to make a longbow, but will my dl be the same?

Yes, they are shorter. One, because the riser on a compound is much larger than most traditional bows. Second, drawing a trad bow has no let off so most people starting out don't extend their bow arm as much or come to a complete anchor.

Your draw length will be an inch or so shorter with recurve or longbow. With a compound my draw length is 30", with a recurve it's 29". However that's with fingers. I guess I don't know how the use of a releasefigures into the compound number.

I was told that you would lose about an inch or so from a recurve and up to 4 inches for a longbow. Whether there is any truth in that or not I don't know. But, I did lose about an inch when I whot my friends hunting recurve.

A lot of people do, but it's not set in stone--it's going to depend on a lot of variables.
Where you anchor, whether or not you used a release aid and/or loop with your compound, draw weight, grip style between the two, etc. etc. etc.

I must confess, I lost about an inch and one half for the first two years. I now have the same draw length as I had when I shot a compound. Like stated above, it is not etched in stone.....
