Poll on Quivers......

Okay, I have the bow, the arrows, the arm guard, and the glove that I want; I need a good quiver. I would prefer leather, but if there is some type of quiet cloth quiver with better features, I will sacrifice. Right now I have a one of those cheap hip quivers that you can get at Walmart for about $5 bucks (no intentions of hunting with it), the kind that clips to your belt and doesn't do a very good job at balancing the arrows to stay in the "up" position.

I will be mostly still hunting and hunting from ground blinds so it must be quiet and when I sit on the ground, easily removable.

Here is my proposal to attaining the most helpful information....

Please tell me what
1. Brand and model/version you use
2. the best thing you like about it
3. the worst thing you hate about it
4. your best recommendation based on current experiences with past or present equipment

I would definitely appreciate if you could tell me these few things so as to help base a foundation for my choice. I have looked at a few of the local pro shops and to say they don't carry much in the way of trad would be an understatement! So I will probably have to order by mail. Thanks for any and all information given.

I don't like quivers on my bow, traditional or wheels. I bought a Cat Quiner II and it works great. It would be a little hard to take off alot. It comes off easy but would be cumbersom with heavy clothes IMO. I hunt mostly from tree stands and it works well for this. The only down side would be if you carried a climbing stand in as you would have to tie it to your stand. You don't have to carry a fanny pack as the Cat Quivers have a pouch that can carry the nessities. Don

Still looking for the perfect quiver. Don't like Selway's slide-on's, Cat Quivers are too narrow for my broad behind and get in the way. Back quivers look good, but too noisy, get in the way in the woods, don't fit me right, and way too hot in the summer. Currently using a hip quiver, don't care for it either. Maybe I am too picky? Slide on quivers just make my longbow feel awkward (am thinking about a Great Northern strap-on though--seems to be a lot lighter), back quivers feel awkward/don't fit/get in the way, hip quivers snag and arrows get yanked out (sometimes without me noticing)......just traded for a heavy leather Lakota style (have tried those too, in light-weight leather), waiting to get it. This one might be the ticket--think it's called a Side Stalker?

Don't let me keep you from trying the quivers I mentioned--first, I am picky about how my bow feels. One reason I shoot a longbow is because it's really light and manuverable, and adding a quiver to it really changes both of those. Most back quivers don't fit me because of my build and I am really hot natured. Open hip quivers are a pain because of the woods I hunt in--honeysuckles, greenbriar, all kinds of vines and bushes, and it seems like all of them have hands grabbing for my arrows.

Sorry I am not more help--good luck!

RE: Poll on Quivers......

There is NO PERFECT QUIVER! I have a German Ridge bow quiver that works well for some situations. It is like the old spring type Bear archery quivers. Very easy on and off. I use it for treestand hunting and remove it while on stand. It doesn't have enough foam in the hood to hold the arrows well. I also have a side quiver(Side Stalker style.) It is easy to remove, work great for ground hunting and stalking. Very hard to reload! The arrows are exposed to rain and snow build up. The fletching cover snags on every bush you pass.
These are the best I've found. Neither is perfect.
On safari, hunters use a gun bearer.
Maybe an arrow bearer? Dick

I use a Selway Quick Detach 4 arrow stick quiver on the bow. My back quiver is a leather quiver w/shearling lining that I bought on ebay. It was originally sold by 3 rivers archery and I believe it is called the whitetail. It holds a dozen arrows without crushing feathers, but I usually only carry 4, two on each side of the divider. It can be worn so that the arrows rest firmly against the quiver and don't move back and forth as I walk. I never wear it deer hunting, but will always have it with me when hog and small game hunting, as well as roving and the occasional trip to the range or the odd 3D that I attend. I don't think there's anything that I don't like about it.

Make em sharp and shoot em straight, or leave em home.

I have Selway,Great Northern, hippers, and back quivers and the one I use all the time anymore is my GN adjustable.I use it on all my longbows and recurves with no problems at all.Stays on tight, holds my arrows securely and goes on and off quick.

That Stalker looks nice! Might have to try that myself.

I've used back quivers, side quivers, tube quivers, bow quivers and no quivers (just carried a couple arrows in my hand). I detest bow quivers. Side quivers snag up too much. Tube quivers dangle down around my knees and get in the way when I have to kneel, crawl or sit. Back quivers are hot in the summer, require a lot of movement to draw an arrow and poorly designed ones are noisy. But back quivers are my favorite.

I made my own back quiver according to Howard Hill's instructions, out of soft leather that collapses on the arrows to keep them from rattling around and keeps them from falling out when you bend over to pick something up, or have to crawl to take advantage of the cover. But it's gotten worn completely out over the past 20 years and I have to make another, as soon as I find a source of leather.

I've also been thinking about the plains indian style of quiver, that hangs horizontally at the hip by an over the shoulder strap. Anyone tried one of those?

RE: Poll on Quivers......

I have a Selway slide on quiver on my recurve now. I used it in hunting season because it was easier to keep my blades sharp, but I actually prefer a back quiver. I have a black leather one a friend made for me that I use for all stumping, 3-D's and small game hunting. I also have a side quiver which I totally hate. I have used a Quickie Quiver and liked it because it was easy to pop off once I was set up, but didn't care for the looks.

The Side Stalker LBR mentioned looks nice. I was talking with Dean at Denton this year while I worked the ATHA/PATHA booth and he showed one to me. Might be my next quiver.
