RE: Longbow or Recurve: Preference?

I was considering one of O.L.s bows, along with Chek-Mate, Tim Meiggs in Nevada and Ric Anderson of Marriah bows. I don't care for the 3 piece takedown longbows. May as well get the curve. After some careful consideration, I bought a used Chek-Mate T/D Crusader from one of the posters here and saved a few bucks over the cost of a new one and I'm glad I went that way. Not because of the little bit of savings, but it reinforced my initial feelings about Marc (bowyer for chek-mate) and his bows. If I buy another longbow, it'll be one of Marc's. Unless I start hearing that workmanship or quality of materials are suffering, then I'll have to start looking again and would probably settle on one of OLs bows or go with Ric Andersons work.

RE: Longbow or Recurve: Preference?

Bowhunter4life - I bought an OL Adcock bow and all others have failed to fit me like it does. Its smooth, fluid, super quiet, quick and hard shooting and the finish is every bit as good as a buddys Black Widow. I have not shot many bows really, longbows at that, but the Chek-Mate recurves, Black Widows, a couple of Bears and an off brand or two, the Widow my buddy has and the Brackenbury that I bought recently do not compare to my Adcock longbow. They just don't have that feel - I cannot explain it much better.

I had three bows picked out before choosing OL to build mine - they were Sley bows and the Horne Combo takedown. The risers and design were similar, and I bet they shoot sweet too. I am actually looking for either of them in a takedown model after I sell this Brackenbury I have. Longbows it is for me, LBR has it right, long bows rule.

RE: Longbow or Recurve: Preference?

I like "hybrid" longbows (deflex/reflex), but have been known to shoot a recurve now and then. In a take-down, I prefer a two-peice. The pin/bolt system Chek-Mate uses makes the bow look and feel like a one-peice--I can swap between the two and not have to make any adjustments to my shooting or grip. The penolic riser adds a little weight over the one-piece (Cocobolo), but not enough to be a bother. I use the same weight bow for tournaments and hunting (swapping out messes with my shooting), so being able to swap out limbs is not something I have to worry about.

I haven't shot any of Mr. Adcocks bows (yet), but he has a great reputation as a bowyer and bussinessman. Two other longbows that I have shot and would reccomend are Roy Hall's Navajo (3 peice) and Ric Anderson's Marriah. These men are also, in my experience, great folks and excellent bowyers. Both their bows are great, but shoot/feel very different to me. Over-all I prefer my Crusader first, but would not hesitate to also reccomend looking at a Marriah, Navajo, or Adcock.

RE: Longbow or Recurve: Preference?

Own and shoot a takedown recurve. Like it but would love to have a longbow. My wish: Chekmate 66" 65# @ 28". Takedown would be nice but a one piece would work as well.

So...anyone out there just wanting to get rid of theirs, just send it my way. :)
