McAlester AAP

Well...I finally got drawn in this year.:D

For all of you that don't know, the McAlester AAP hunt is a hunt that is a draw hunt in Oklahoma that is trad equipment only. Stick and string only; no compounds, no sights, no binocs, no rangefinder, just the bare minimums. There are many trophy animals taking from the base every year, and from what I hear, it is a great hunting experience.

I will be hunting the Hominy area Oct 26-28. I was just wandering if anyone else has been drawn into this hunt? If so, how was it and do you have any advice? I appreciate any advice and stories.

Never had the pleasure of hunting there, but I've always thought it was most excellent that it is an all-traditional hunt. Congrats on getting drawn and good luck.

You're really taxing my memory here, but I think the last time I was drawn there I hunted Hominy. I'd have to see a map to be sure.

There was a road near the front part of Hominy (if it's the right section I'm thinking about). It was the dividing line between the center section that is off limits all the time (seems like it's calle "Bear Trap" or something like that). Just a little ways up that road was a parking spot or a pull off. It was at the top of a small ridge. Everyone passed it up but just beyond it is an huge overgrown field before the road goes up another ridge.

The spot between the parking lot and the overgrown field was about 50 yards wide, good bottleneck. I killed two (buck and doe) in there the last time I was drawn, about 10 years ago.

I'll see if I can't find a map.

Most guys do well at the bottle necks between those overgrown fields and along the creek bottoms.
