My fellow beginners....
 

I've noticed I'm not the only one thats making the switch to traditional bows around here. I was wondering what draw weights you other guys started with? I shoot 60 lbs. with a compound so I'm thinking 45 lbs. for my new Chek-Mate recurve. Shouldn't that be plenty for whitetail deer and turkeys? And I can always get a heavier set of limbs later.

I think you have a lot more sense than I did when I started out! lol I began with a 55# recurve but quickly traded up a longbow that I was pulling 80#+ on--just didn't know any better. 45# will do the job on deer and turkey, and later on if you decide to go heavier you can get new limbs (with a take-down). You will be more accurate and have more fun shooing a bow you are comfortable with, and a double lung with 45# is a lot better than a miss with 100#.

LBR pretty much summed it up.I made the same mistake as him and ordered my first longbow at 70# ( figured no problem seeing as I was pulling 84 on my wheel bow ) Wrong.I now shoot 55-60# and am much more accurate and confident.45# is plenty for deer and turkeys as long as you have a nice sharp broadhead and take the time to tune your bow.Good luck and shoot straight

Add me to the list. I was shooting 70# on my compound with a 65% letoff. Didn't know the bow I choose would stack at a 30" draw and ended up pulling 73#, no letoff. Forget about accuracy. Switched to a 57 # at 28" or about 61 # @ 30". Easy to handle and more pleasent to shoot. I also bought a 50 # at 28" or about 54# @ 30", for small game and form practice. I find that my form is improving when I can really concentrate and the ligther bow makes it real easy.

I started with a 45# Martin X-200. I now hunt with a 55# Chek-Mate
Falcon.
