Question on recurve flemish string???
i have just got my flemish recurve string in the mail and i have already put it on my bow, but that aint the problem i noticed after a few shots the string strands are already starting to break, what is wrong????
thanks |
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
I'm curious myself. I noticed mine coming apart yesterday. Ask on the trad forum, I think LBR or one of the guys there could come up with an answer.

? I dont know.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
If what looks like broken strings is occurring where the loops are woven back on themselves at each end, it's probably the raw ends of the strands showing through where the maker ended the weave.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
What wingbone said. The flemish twist strings have short strands of string material twisted into the ends of the string. to give a bigger diameter and stronger string at the ends, leaving the middle of the string thinner. Those pieces twisted in the ends stick out everywhere.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
well you will see the string ends a few inches below the loops because they drop strands when they finishthe string loops....thats why the string should have a tapered look to itby the loops....this is normal....if you have broke strands in the actual string bundles down from the loop ends like in the middle of the string or in the loops themselvesthats not good and dont use that string if you look close you can tell if its the end of a strand or a break(if what you are seeing is on the tapered section of the string... i copied this from your thread in trad forum....the first part is the same as what wingbone said basically. |
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
So is it a problem? |
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
This is what mine is doing. It has about 1000 shots through it. What would cause this to happen? There are no sharp edges on the limb tip.
|
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
dont use that string tex!
itjust wore out and started to break.... friction is probably the culprit....wax your loops religiously and you should get more shots out of a string. take your string off and rub in alittle wax your loops everytime or everyother timeyou shoot...what material isthat string made out of you know? id go over your limb tips/string gooves with some 1200 and work down to 2000 grit sand paper just to make sure theres no sharpies. also wou can put a little waxon your string groves and then burnish it into the wood with a brown paper bag or a dollar bill to seal the grain. |

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
I think its dacron but I'm not sure. I'll ask Chad.I do wax but I don't take the string off and do the loops. Lesson learned. I knew not to use that string again. I had another new one for a back up.
EDIT: I don't think my bow can handle fast flight. |

Also make sure you note weather its top or bottom limb causing the wear. |
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
yea youd might as well not wax your string if your not gonna do the loops(the whole loop wich means taking the string off the bow) theris nothing wrong with dacron its just not as hard...so you have to take more care of it.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
The bow is a Darton Hunter recurve. 56" and 49# at 28"
|
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
if the tips are reinforced with overlays(small peices of laminated wood or micarta-phenolic over the glass) its ok for Fast flight....but i dont think it is...that bows pretty old, use Dacron or something simular ....talk to Chad.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
It does have wood overlays but I'm not willing to take a chance with it. It is shooting well so I will leave it alone. All I need to do is provide better maintenance.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
On the little tags sticking out below the loops, the others covered it well. I trim them off flush, but there's always some that work their way out--it won't hurt a thing, but if it bugs you they can be trimmed off--nail clippers work with dacron, but it takes an exacto knife for the others (be careful!).
TX, you obviously can't feel it but there's a rough spot in that string groove somewhere. Dacron isn't nearly as tough as the other materials, but it shouldn't cut like that. It doesn't take much of a spot to cause that, especially with a lot of shoting. Rubbing a cotton ball in the groove may show you where it's at (it will catch a little bit of the cotton). The groove needs to be polished smooth and that will take care of the problem. Chad |
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
OK, thanks for the tip Chad. I'll try the cotton ball thing tonight when I get home before I tear up another string. What can I use to smooth it out?
|
RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
A very fine sandpaper or emery cloth, depending on how much smoothing it needs. Worst case scenario, it may require a bowyer.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
No bowyer for this cheap e-bay bow! This might be what I need to convince my wife I need a new one!

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
I couldn't bring myself to break it. I checked with a cotton ball and did find a rough edge. A fine grit paper took it off and I'm good to go. Sorry AC, this bow won't be making a trip to Illinois.

RE: Question on recurve flemish string???
![]() oh well i tried.....you know you want a new bow TEX quit foolin yourself;)..i know what you mean...after you shoot a bow for more than a few months they are hard to let go of. let alone break. good to see you found your sharp edge and took care of it |
