That is a sharp bow, how does it shoot??
This bow shoots great! I'm almost tempted to sell all my other longbows. It's quiet,it's fast,no shock at all,and it points and hits like no other longbow I ever had.
Right now,I'm shooting aluminums off of it.All my wood arrows are spined too heavy for it

Dalebow 03-18-2007 08:11 AM

RE: New Bows

I like a good alum, not expensive and you dont have to straighten like wood.
Looks like a howard hill design??

JimPic 03-18-2007 09:25 AM

RE: New Bows

It is a Howard Hill

Awesome looking bow Jim. I also have a Wesley Special that I'm hoping to use on moose in a few years. Most stable bow I own.

I am in the process of negotiating a John Schulz longbow right now. Hopeful it will come through.

And yes, it is always fun getting a new or used bow. But it's also very addicting.[&:]

RE: New Bows

Thanks Bob-and you're absolutely right about being stable.Definitely the best shooting longbow I ever owned.Good luck on the Schulz-hope ya get it

nice longbow.....ill bet she draws smooth

ive been waiting for my Chek-Mate Falcon since the last week of july 2006...every once in a while i think about the day i will get to hold her in my arms for the first time[&:]....which should be soon enuff....considering ive been waiting 7 months....i just hope i get her on a day off...so i dont have call into work just toget familiar with her.

RE: New Bows

That's the hardest part-the waiting!! A few years ago,I ordered a Blacktail recurve.About 8 months after I ordered,I wanted a new guitar. The wife said one or the other so I bought the guitar and cancelled my bow order.

Alpha Capo 03-18-2007 12:03 PM

RE: New Bows

if my wife made me pick between a bow and a guitar...id get rid of my wife and buy both.....every guy knows a real woman would buy you the guitar, while youcan pay for the bow.[:o][8D]

shes lucky you didnt get real mad at her and choose the new bow instead of the guitar,.... without her knowing that you were going to shoot her withit because ofher not letting you get the guitar. ;)

Dalebow 03-18-2007 12:12 PM

RE: New Bows

alpah I have to agree:-)

I try to have a new bow on order so Iam getting something about every 3-4 months, its an addiction but cheaper than golf!!

JimPic 03-19-2007 08:13 AM

RE: New Bows

It worked out pretty good in the end, though.I would've sold the recurve anyway for a good bit less than what it would've cost.I pretty much shoot longbows now anymore.
I got 6 longbows in the past 6 months(my new Hill Wesley Special just arrived today)and she really hasn't complained. And she did buy me another new guitar last year:)

What is the Black Bear, how does it shoot, I got turned off to howard hill bow because of the shock, is this one better with that, sounds like a nice bow??

JimPic 03-19-2007 11:40 PM

RE: New Bows

The Black Bear is a carbon-backed Wesley Special.I have 2 Hills and shot many others and never experienced the hand shock people talk about. My buddy just got his Black Bear yesterday so I'll be shooting it tonite. The Wesley on the left just came in the mail yesterday, too.Sweet shooter!64",45#@28",myrtle riser w/locator grip and black glass

A lot has to do with the shock issue that I can think of.
1. Hand shock is relative to perception, everyone is different. Asktwo people if there there is hand shock, one can say yes, the other no.
2. The way the bow is held/shot.
3. The bows tune including arrow weight.

IMO, the Hill bows do have some hand shock, but there are always trade offs. IMO efficiency of the HH bow is only lost on hand shock since these bows are extremely quiet even without any string silencers. The quietness coupled with the stability of these bows more then offsets the handshock issue to me anyway.

RE: New Bows

Hey Iam not knocking them, I shoot Wes Wallace and Fox and BW longbows and they have a little more reflex, deflex than the Hill's. I shoot at least 57-58 # and those D style bows can kick no matter how you hold them, but they are quiet and accurate.
Id like to get a lighter longbow for stumpin and chasing small game, I will have to look at the Black Bear!!
Howard Hill was the man for sure:)

BobCo19-65 03-20-2007 07:43 AM

RE: New Bows

I know you're not nocking them. Never thought you were.

Try gripping one tightly with a locked out elbow. I've done it on accident a few times with my 74# Wesley Special. Ouch. :D

Here is a site which gets into detail of the HH grip for anyone interested.
http://www.howardhillshooters.com/hillgrip/hillgrip.html

I also have some R/D longbows and some recurves with virtually no hand shock. Always trade offs though.

IMHO though, I like the differences between a D style longbow and a recurve. I don't think I will personally get anything in-between anymore (hybrid).

I will check out the site:-)
Nice looking bows

I'd like to try a Hill style bow someday. I've owned or shot just about every other style. I personally don't like the way they look, but if they shoot good I could care less how they look!!

Do you guys get excited about new bows, I am like a kid at Christmas
Yep, I was bouncing off the walls watching the mail box until this arrived on my door step last Monay.

That's my new Chekmate Sabre; bocote and cocobolo riser with black walnut limbs. When the package arrived, Shelly said my eyes lit up like a young kid on Christmas morning. I probably look like a kid tearing into that box too. I should be able to finally shoot some arrows through it this afternoon. Between work and the weather, getting shooting time has been a challenge.
