Check-mate Crusader
I have been thinking about my first longbow and am giving a hard look at the Check-mate Crusader. I have read quite a bit on the forum that sings its praise...a couple of questions...does anyone have a links to pics (I found a few on the web but nothing great), opinions, good/bad about the bow, others that are similar. Also, I would be interested to hear any additioanl info people might have about this bow. I have a couple of recurves and have shot archery for 20 years, the traditioanl side is creeping back like a raging river...any info or tips appreciated. One last thing, does anyone know if they do a trial period...it may be a stretch, but I would love to try before I buy...
Thanks Brian |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
Brian,
I was in your situation about 2 months ago. Been shooting my compound for about 10 years and got the itch for a traditional style bow. Bought a Martin Hunter recurve and a Viper longbow. My draw length, 30", was too much for the Martin, alot of stacking. Viper was okay, I got discouraged shooting it, wasn't very consistent. I read alot on this and other forums and talked to numerous bowyers. Then I talked to that evil LBR (Chad Weaver). I was looking for a smooth shooting bow that I could use for hunting (when I got good enough with it). He recommended a 64" Crusader. Can't say enough good things about it. I went from hoping to hit the target, to small groups (like I'm use to with my compound) the first time I shot it. Chad was very helpful and informative. Been so impressed I bought another one and it should be here in a few days!!!! It's like a compound, if it's sized right,a good quality bow, you'll have fun, if not, as I found out with a cheap bow, it can be frustrating. I'm sure Chad will respond to your e-mail, he's the moderator of this forum. Talk to him about what you need. |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
Thanks for the fast response. I have read quite a bit on the forum, some very happy users. The cost of this bow fits right in where I want to be...I'm glad I have heard some great things and am sure others will chime in with good news...thanks for the response...

RE: Check-mate Crusader
I'm also looking at the Raven...any thoughts, experiences, comments (ggod/bad) would be much appreciated.
Thanks Brian |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
I have a few picturs I can send. Personally, I love them--to date, they are the best longbow (to me) I have ever shot--the best bow period. Again, that is just my opinion--there is no one bow that is perfect for everyone. Lots of great bows on the market, lots that I wouldn't mind owning, but since I shot my first one I have been hooked on the Crusader.
If you have specific questions, I should be able to answer them. You can post them here, or if you had rather you can e-mail me at [email protected] . Chad Long Bows Rule! |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
I have a 62" crusader and love it. Smooth, fast, and no felt handshock that I can tell. Shoots where I want it to as well. I don't think you can go wrong with a Chekmate bow of any type but I prefer the Crusader. Also, you will probably want Chad to make you up a couple perty strings to match your bow. That way, you'll look good while you're gettin used to your new bow.
Have fun and good luck, Strutter |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
Thanks for the replies. Any info on the Raven? I am tossing both around...probably will end up with both, but trying to determine which to get first :)
Thanks again! |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
The Raven is a great little bush/treestand/ground blind bow, if you draw 28" or less. More than that, you are probably gonna feel a bit of stack. It is, like most any short bow, a little more picky with brace height and silencer placement--can be noisy if you don't take the time to get those right. It's a hunting bow for sure. Just got one with a cocobolo riser and Macassar ebony veneer on the limbs--looks wicked!

RE: Check-mate Crusader
I have a Raven (47@28) I purchased at a shoot. I wasnt looking for a bow at the time just tried it to pass the time. Shot it about 10 times and took it home with me. It is now my main bow. I hunt with it shoot 3D and indoor targets. If I could only keep one bow this would be the one. It shoots a lot like my Browning Cobra which used to be my go to bow. I would not hesitate to recomend this modle or even buy another
(wich I will) for my son. |
RE: Check-mate Crusader
Thanks for the info. My draw length is 28", so I should fall within the limit. Based on all the info from this forum and the many glowing reports, I am looking at the Raven and the Crusader. I suppose I should just buy both, huh
Thanks again |
