string length help

hey everyone,

I just got my Ben Pearson mach1 recurve, it's 52"AMO, 45# @28", the bow never came with a string which I knew before I bought it but now I need to get my hands on one. I know if I order a string I just need to ask the guy for a string for this bow BUT..... my local shop here just got a bunch of older stock in and he has some strings for recurves but to be honest I don't trust this guy to sell me exactly what I need because he sold me arrows before that were over splined for my compound so I don't trust him now. He says I would need a string about 4" shorter than my AMO is this correct??? if so I would need a 48" string?

some help here would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance
Vinyari

I have been going through the same thing. I ordered a string that was too short. My fault. It is true that a recurve string is generally 4" shorter than the AMO length. LBR the moderator for this forum can get you a good string from what I hear. I ordered one from him for my recurve. To place an order go to www.recurves.com He has been very helpful to me.

RE: string length help

my only problem with ordering from Chad is that he's in the states and I'm from Canada, at least 2 weeks shipping time(if he has one in stock) and customs charges on top of that. I can order them here in Alberta or maybe even luck into getting one from my local shop. I also know I can't use the new dynaflight type strings as I have an older bow so I need dacron string (I think that's what it's called).

sorry for being such a newb here, all my experience is with compounds but I am learning as I go.

thanks alot

Actual AMO Standards say 3" shorter than marked AMO bow length, but I've seen that varya little, both ways, from bow to bow. 3-4" should be a good starting point.

from what I've been told, and been reading it should be 3" shorter for a longbow and 4" shorter for a recurve.

hope I'm on the right track here

RE: string length help

Chris is dead on about AMO specs, but a lot of bows don't go by AMO specs. I've seen it go from 1.5" to 4" shorter for longbows, 2.5" to 6" shorter for recurves. The Pearson's I've owned did fine with a string 4" shorter. 12 strand dacron for that one. Most likely it's going to settle in some, but a few twists will fix that.
