What is the longest shot you would take with your recurve our long bow?

At the range last Friday, I took a 70 yard shot at a Buffalo 3-d target. First one was under second one was over, third I drilled it.

At a live whitetail, the situation would have to dictate itself. But probably not past about 25 yards.

With my longbow, I might take a 20yard shot, but it would have to feel real good. I feel much better with a 15 yard shot. I lost a doe this year over a bad shot, so my confidense is little low.

15 and under....maybe in afew yrs Ill expand it to 20yrds.NOW assuming someone else is buying my arrows and its a 3-D target I will try as long as it takes to hit a deer at say 150-200 yrds:D:D:D.
Now assuming that were assuming its a real deer under hunting conditions I will not shoot past 15yrds,give or take room for judgement errors.

45 yards, got the antlers on the wall from that one, and yes that took and takes allot of practice, used a longbow and cedar arrows

ATM, 20 yards. I hope to be up to 35 yards by next season. I would like to get even better than that.

Yes, 45 is a shot i would not even take with m compound most of the time. I would be throwing partys to show that of when i get it back.

Depends on the critter, situation, how it feels, etc. I've shot rabbits beyond 20 yds, killed a little pig last Feb. at near 25 yds, and passed on deer well under 20. I can say I wouldn't take an 80 yd shot, but that's about as specific as I can get because I just don't know until it's time to decide.

i agree with chad,feel is all-important.if its a clean shot,25 with the recurve,35 with the tribby-mike

Well, since I just got my recurve yesterday I wouldn't take any shot at a live animal. I did however manage to hit the bag target at 20 yds. I shot about 30 times and only missed the bag 5x. I'm pretty happy with that for my first day!

Well i can see what you are saying about feel. I would like to be able to shot at the least 30 and fell some what consistant just in a case i ever need to shot that far

Twenty yards or less because I don't feel the speed and energy are there for longer distances.

Sag, find a copy of "The Legendary Hunts of Ben Pearson". Ben had a short draw, his bowstrings resembled rope compared to what we have today, and he made some LONG shots that killed animals. Or read"Fred Bear's Field Notes"--same thing.

Distance is limited because of the archer's ability, propensity of the animal to move, wind, etc. but unless you are talking about 4-footed tanks (hippo, elephant, water or cape buffalo, etc.) a set-up that is reasonable (not borderline)for 15 yds willbe fine for 30. It's been proven too many times. From what I've seen though, most of us (myself included) would do better to stick to closer shots.

well the fred bear thing is right. It is all about your ability as a hunter, not really the bow as much.

I am with txjourneyman wouldn't even dream of a shot on anything bigger than my glen-del! By next fall i believe 15 for me.

if I'm comfortable with the shot, I'm taking it.

I've 12ringed McKenzies at 100 yards just to prove that I could do it...

I've passed15 yard chipshots because I had that little sliver of doubt...

17-20 yards would be about it on a live animal
