hello,everyone.I'm considering going traditional on my next bow.I'll list some questions and you guys can answer whatever you please.
1]longbow or Recurve?what are the pluses and minuses of each?
2]Compounds boast about FPS.What can you expect from a taditional?How important is it ?
3]What kind of poundage is needed for Whitetail?
4]Do you guys hunt with Cedar arrows exclusively?
5]How do you fit the right arrow to bow?
6]I'm thinking of buying a kit from Quillan off Ebay,any feedback on his bows?

1]longbow or Recurve?what are the pluses and minuses of each?

No short answer there, because there are recurves that feel like longbows, and longbows that feel like recurves. Generally speaking, recurves are faster, noisier, heavier (mass weight), and cut past center (longbows usually aren't). Lot's of exceptions to the above though.

2]Compounds boast about FPS.What can you expect from a taditional?How important is it ?

A lot of trad bowyers/companies use speed as a selling point. How important it is depends on what you plan to hunt, and how much draw weight you can handle. For instance, if you can only shoot 35# accurately (assuming it's legal in your state) and draw 26", then for anything larger than a turkey you want every advantage you can get. Not always a faster arrow, but a bow that puts more energy behind a heavier arrow to maximize penetration. On the other hand, if you don't hunt anything larger than whitetail, and pull 50@30, a hickory selfbow that shoots a 450 grain arrow at 160 fps will do the job. In most cases, 5-10 fps isn't going to make a big difference, except in the sales pitch.

3]What kind of poundage is needed for Whitetail?

Generally your state minimum draw weight will work fine. 40@28 from a decent bow will shoot through the average whitetail. However, the rest of your equipment, primarily the arrow and broadhead, are just as important if not moreso.


4]Do you guys hunt with Cedar arrows exclusively?

Traditonal shooters use different kinds of wood arrows, carbon, aluminum, graphite, cane, composites, etc.

5]How do you fit the right arrow to bow?

You look at a chart and ask for advice to get you in the ball part, then you experiment and tune. Different string materials, number of strands in the string, point weights, and shaft lenghts can all change arrow flight.


6]I'm thinking of buying a kit from Quillan off Ebay,any feedback on his bows?

I suggest a good laminated bow--you can generally pick up an old Pearson, Root, Shakespeare, Indian, Martin, etc. at a reasonable price.


7]Do you all camo your bows,wear camo when hunting?

No--it's optional. I usually wear camo clothes, because I like the pockets and it's hard to find that type clothing in regular clothes. I don't camo my bow or arrows at all.


8] What is an expected range[yds] for these?

Depends on you and how well you can shoot. My guess is most folks like to keep their shots at 20 yds or less, but they will put the arrow where you point it. There's been some amazingly long distance kills made with trad bows (over 100 yds), but that's not feasible for the average guy.
