My Son's New Self Bow (we made it)

Check out my son's new self bow. We built it at the Hawkeye Bowmen Shoot here in NY. It took us from 10:00 Am till 9:00 PM to finish it up. I gained a lot of respect for Bowyers. The bow is completely ossage and is 35# at 26". Next year, I'm gonna have to make one for myself. Here is a pic of him shooting.

Thanks for the warnings guys, I but I think I have already been bit. Can't stop appreciating the bow that we built. And am looking forward to the next one already.

I think had to be the best father - son project ever. Andwould most definetely recommend it to anyone. Just expect to put some time into it.

That is very cool! I would love to do that with my two boys. He looks good shooting it. There is nothing like seeing your kids enjoying something you love. I think it is great to see a father taking that much time to something with/for his son.

Thanks guys,

ktbearpaws, we built it at the Hawkeye Bowmen shoot under the direction of Gary Davis.

Usually at most of the major shoots you can buy the staves and build the bows right there using their equipment and under some supervision of an expert.

Nice job Bob. I'm working on mine right now. Well the stave part at least. Just busted an osagelog into five staves tonight. They're a little twisty but they were free.

Where did you get the info on how to make the bow?

All the info I got was directly from Gary Davis. Gary is from Michigan but travels to a lot of the major shoots. He was at our clubs August Primitive Shoot this past August and walk us through building the bow. I think the direct information was the way to go. It generally takes about 10-12 hours to work a stave into a bow unless the stave just happens to be a real good one. If you get a chance to get to a shoot make sure you check to see if there is a bow build along set up. It's a lot of fun.

Being the first one we ever built, I don't think I could have built a decent bow without some expert help. Gary was able to see things that I couldn't especially in the tillering but he taught me well. We even made a flemish string (well my son did).
