are you non-traditional traditional ?

I made up a bunch of wood shafts over the winter - sanded, stained, dipped in GL ......... nice shafts. I'm now going to cap them with 3M Solas Reflective Tape ! Why ? High reflective properties allow easier recovery of arrow, and the feathers seem to stick much tighter to the shafts too.

You guys do anything not so traditional when shooting traditional ?

My armgaurd is one of those elastic ones that slip over your arm too - although I have a sweet leather one from Steven Catts, I still use my non-traditional one.

My forearms are tough as steel and require no pansy, limp wristed arm guard......:D

My quiver is a Realtree H-D Green Bohning...... Nothing traditional about that!!

I've heard you can self-tap the CX risers with a Dremel tool, using a metal sheet rock tap screw and wing nut.

I use carbons(I do crest & cap them,though),screw-n broadheads,3D leafy camo, and a regular arm guard-I only use when when hunting to keep my jacket down.I wear a leather armguard at trad shoots if I'm shooting my longbow.

I think I will pass on that!!

RE: are you non-traditional traditional ?

My longbow has fiberglass, phenolic, and sports a string made from one of the strongest man-madefibers available. My broadheads are produced by a machine, as my glove is sewn by a machine. My shafting is wood, but the dowels are turned by a machine. My feathers are real, but dyed most of the time, and die cut. Even my selfbow has a Dynaflight '97 string on it.

Tradtional? What's that? I'm a modern archer!

Seriously, if someone wants to hunt with natural shafting, knapped broadheads, a sinew string, a bow they gnawed out of a tree with their teeth, and wear a loincloth made from a fox squirrel that they ran down and choked to death with their bare hands, more power to them. I like my modern equipment (although I am enjoying that selfbow quite a bit).

Amen Chad!! I can see how going totally primitive would have it's appeal.... It's like a second hobby all together..... Seems most of them are more into making the equipment rather than tweaking their setups for maximum performance..... I'm a bowhunter first, that means I want and demand the best equipment..... BUT, I do have limits to my madness as well.... For instance, I like a wood bow(w/ carbon ;)), I don't care for sights or arrow rests......But if you do, great!! The sport is so facinating!! You can go any direction you wish and have a great time doing it!!! And at the end of the day, we are all one big brotherhood..... I love the fact that I can look at peoples scores and really respect it!! B/C I know what kind of work and experience it took to get there!! I love it!!!!!! The compound guys just don't know what they are missing!!

Sick, sick, sick...........I didn't say I wore a loincloth! Besides, that little scrap would look more like a thong on me. I'm afraid to ask what kind of sites you surf to come up with a picture likethat......[:'(]

Its a talent Chad ........ what can I say ? Some people got the skill, some people don't.

But C'mon ......... lets you and I meet up at a shoot, wear loin cloths, shooting self bows, cane shafts and knapped heads, and only communciate with grunts, gutteral sounds and pointing. Wouldn't that be a hoot ? :D

Carbon shafts is as untraditional as I get with my traditionals. As for my compounds, I like technology.

If I showed up in a loincloth, it would just make everyone nauseous!

We've got 4 more shoots at Lost Tribe (just outside Memphis) this year--you gonna' come shoot, or is you chicken?:D They are all on Saturday, and the Sep. shoot is their charity shoot--free food, door prizes, and raffling off a really nice td recurve and bow case--the case itself retails for $60, the bow is almost $600.

Got a real good one coming up at Tannehill State Park in two weeks--the new Howard Hill championship put on by Terry Harris--great guy, great shoot--the supper on Sat. night is worth the trip, and if you are lucky (I'm not) he gives out a gob of really nice door prizes. I'm not talking hats and bumper stickers here--bows, quivers, arrows, Coleman lanterns, etc. Great course to boot, showers right there, pretty cheap camp fees, etc. etc. etc.

If anyone needs details, let me know.

I wish I could make the HH shoot...... Not going to happen this year though, family obligations...... I may try to make it down there in August for the ASTB State Championship.....

I may try to slip down to Baton Rouge this weekend.... Are you going Chad?

Can't make it to The Real Thing--really want to (would love to shoot at some of the old Wilsonville HH targets again), it's just too dang far and too close to some other biggies I have to get ready for. Down to almost nothing for inventory, and when I go that far I have to set up and at least try to make gas money. Hate to go to a shoot like that and be stuck making strings all weekend too, so......I reckon I'll miss it again. Have to makea run up to TN this weekend anyhow--bought a bunch of "Monster" targets from Kevin at Twin Oaks and didn't have any room in my truck to bring them home. Gotta take a trailer up and get them--got 9 of those suckers to haul in. The bigger ones probably weigh around 300#.

What is a "monster" target?

LBR 05-24-2006 02:34 PM

RE: are you non-traditional traditional ?

Kevin Cordell from GA makes them. The foam composition is a secret, but they are great. He makes two densities--the harder ones (packed tighter) are usually preferred by compound shooters. They are butt-ugly, kinda box shaped (hence the name "Monster"), but last and last and last. Can be shot from any side, broadheads or feild points. Pull easy too. I've had one out in the weather for at least 4 or 5 years, and still shooting it on one side. The big ones are $60--you can take a chainsaw and cut those in half if you want. I have a few $60, a few $50, and a few $40. Think one of them is the denser version. I've known Kevin for several years, and have bought targets from him almost every time I see him--mainly because when I got home with them, someone wanted it and I'd sell it. He usually sells out when he sets up, often the first day.

Anyhow, he pulled his back out (loading the truck, I think) and wanted to go back home Saturday rather than stay for Sunday and try to sell out, so I bought what he had left. I got a little bit of a discount for taking the whole bunch, but driving back up to TN to get them is going to eat that (never been accused of thinking ahead). I've got a couple sold already, and plan on hauling the rest to shoots with me--I'll sell them at cost. Not the prettiest target I ever shot, but one of the best bargains I've found in something to shoot at.
