RE: Killed a widow tonite
"oh btw, welcome back Vic, as I can see we aint gonna do nuttin but argue as usual! Welcome home bro....."
Thanks, but I've been around Dan. I enjoy reading many of these threads, but seem to rarely find much I could add to most posts these days. BTW, if y'all are interested, there's a BW bashing thread on LW right now too... |
RE: Killed a widow tonite
John, I have broken one of those rods myself. Bought it under the impression that is was dang-near indestructable, found out that the commercials ain't always based on fact. That just gripes me about anything--if you have a good product and good service, it will sell--you don't have to make it out to be something it isn't, shoot a mile-long line of bull, or do some kind of trick photography to back it.
Vic, I've said it before and I will most likely say it again. Your BW is a shooter, no doubt about it. Not the bow for me, but I don't blame you at all for liking it. My gripe is not with the equipment, but with some of the sales pitches used. I beleive you shot (owned?) one of the longbows, didn't you? Would you agree with this quote from the catalog? "No, the BW longbow is not quite as fast nor as sweet to shoot as a BW recurve. But you may agree with others who claim it is quicker and has less hand shock than many of the other recurve bows they have owned and that it is far superior to all of the other longbows they have ever shot." (emphasis mine) I have shot one of the longbows, and talked to and read about several others that have shot them. Most didn't care much for them, some not at all, and even the ones that did like them didn't make any such claim as the above. That is my gripe. It's not with you or any other BW shooter or owner. Obviously yours works for you, and that is great. The hype just completely turns me off though. That is one of the things I really like about Marc. You have talked to him--have you ever heard him patting himself on the back or talking about his bows being so great? Ever seen a full page, full color CM add or catalog? It's because a great product sells itself. I wish BW would pick up on that, drop the ads, and then they could lower their prices to a more reasonable level. I know that kind of overhead is way expensive, and has to be covered some way or another. Ok, off my soapbox now. Chad Long Bows Rule! |

"But you may agree with others who claim..."
Hey, I'll bet there are others who claim that Elvis is pumping gas at a Citgo station somewhere. It's a typical marketing tactic. Goes right along with things like; "People are saying...", "Experts agree...", and "beats the leading competition". Sounds good on paper...means zip. JRW |
RE: Killed a widow tonite
Vic,
You can always contribute something worthwhile to any of the threads on this or any other traditional forum. It IS good to see you posting again. I'm about ready to head to West Virginia a week from Friday for our annual bowhunting for deer and feasting festival! If we don't get deer, we surely feast!! All I have to do now is get my big toe on my left foot to heal so I can walk the mountains to hunt. I had to have part of the nail removed this morning. It is throbbing pretty good right now. But, I have about 10 days for it to heal. Take care and best of luck hunting this year. Got anything yet? My son has harvested a doe and a 5 point buck in Georgia. All I have seen is squirrels and mosquitos! Bill Praise the Lord, He is worthy |
RE: Killed a widow tonite
While we're discussing Widows...and I'm still able to post...
Right or wrong, justified or not, they ARE the "benchark bow". By that, I don't mean that they are the best, rather, they are the standard by which others are judged. A lot of people who don't know a recurve from a longbow still know the name Black Widow. Heck, I had a guy last weekend look at my Chek-Mate and ask if it ws a Widow. Look at all the threads and discussions that take place comparing every bow under the sun to Widows. Are they expensive? Yep. But so are a lot of other bows that people line up for. IMO, part of the attraction to some of these bows IS the price tag. JRW |
RE: Killed a widow tonite
JRW, behave dangit! You're advice is really helpful and appreciated here, and Lord knows I need all I can get!
I agree, they are a benchmark, probably THE benchmark, but reckon' why? Could it be their longevity? I am sure that is part of it, even though the company has swapped hands a time or three, it has carried the same name. Is it the quality? No doubt that is part of it also. How about the advertising? BINGO!! (reckon Matthews would be so popular if not for the advertising blitz?) In my opinion, that is why BW bows are so well known. People who never held a traditional bow still see the full page, full color ads in lots of different hunting magazines. On the other hand, even though CM has been around for 30 years, they are just beginning to get some recognition in the US. They don't advertise, because: 1-it keeps them affordable, and 2-word of mouth keeps them covered up, so why spend the extra cash to get even further behind? The cost of the BW bows (and others) affords them recognition too, and I agree that is why some people are attracted to them--they might not be able to hit a barn from the inside, but they sure look cool toting that expensive bow around--lol. Personally, I don't understand it--the price thing, that is. Sure, if it shoots better for you and you can afford it, no reason not to get one, but to buy it just because it costs more? Reminds me of a fellow I was told about. He was selling a pretty nice bow really cheap, but was hardley getting any orders for it. He jacked his price way up on it, and couldn't get them fast enough. Seen the same thing with antiques. Take a rusty 'ol something or other that you picked up at a garage sale for $2, call it an antique, and sell it for $50. Go figure....... Chad Long Bows Rule! RE: Killed a widow tonite
Oh, c'mon now Chad. I always behave. Some people just have no sense of humor (not mentioning names, or attacking/flaming anyone). Not my fault.
Besides, how can anyone expect me to watch "Jimmy Jones Meets Bowhunting" and NOT laugh. You just can't make up stuff that funny. Join me now, as I sing a medley of happy campfire songs... JRW (happy happy joy joy) Edited by - jrw on 10/29/2002 13:35:16 |
