My first Traditional kill!
I'm going to try to get my first traditional kill this fall. I have a spot that a guy wants does taken care of. It should be pretty easy to get within 15 yds. I'm not comfortable much farther that that.
What is your max yardage that you would shoot a deer with trad. equipment? |
RE: My first Traditional kill!
Just wanted to add that I killed my first deer bare bow compound 17 years ago!:D
|
RE: My first Traditional kill!
20 yards for me.
|
RE: My first Traditional kill!
20 for me as well. 25ish if the situation is perfect.

RE: My first Traditional kill!
I would have to say 18 for me, I wish I could say 20 but I dont shoot it enuf. Small game I would be ok taking a 20-25 yard shoot.

RE: My first Traditional kill!
I'm just getting back into it myself...I don't plan on hunting much, and if I do it will only be after I get comfy w/ my shooting again (likely towards the end of the year)....My goal is 15 yards for this season..again *if* I get comfy....I ain't goin out flingin arrows at a deer if I'm not comfy. Next season my goal is 20 yards. Personally, I think that will be my limit due to the nature of trad gear...though I certainly will practice at longer distances.

RE: My first Traditional kill!
I'll be doing the same since I didn't get much bow time last year due to buying a home . I'm uncomfortable and inaccurate outside 20 yards , and prefer 10-15 .

Back to the original question, I don't have a set limit. I don't start my season by thinking "ok, if a deer comes within x yards of me, I'll shoot, or if it's farther than that, I'll pass". Of course we should stay within our limits, but (for me at least) that can change on a given day. Some days I may not feel good about a shot at 10 yds, another day 25 may be just fine. I'm not going to take a 60 yd shot, but I couldn't say that 30 yds would be out of bounds if everything was right. Bows--traditional or otherwise--are limited by the person behind them. Many of the old icons made amazing long-distance kills on game. On the video "The Legendary Hunts of Ben Pearson" Ben killed a javalina that was waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy off. The narrator give the distance in city blocks (I forget how many), and in an article I read about that same hunt several years ago they gave the distance as well over 100 yds. I'm not advocating taking 100 yds shots with any bow--what I'm saying is the bow will do it's part if you can do yours. In all honesty, it's not likely I'll be taking over a 15-20 yd shot this season, because most of the places I hunt are too trashy to allow a clear shot any further--I'll be lucky to get that much in some places. I'll still practice longer shots though, just in case. Practicing at longer distances makes the closer shots easier anyway. Chad |
RE: My first Traditional kill!
I've been walking around the yard the last couple of days with a judo point, and havebeen shooting at different things around the yard (Leaves, sticks Ect........) I'm usually real close. It's pretty cool when you pick a leave out at 20 yards and smoke it with a recurve!!!!!!
