RE: What do you guys look for in a buck
I pretty much look for a doe or two right as season opens for the freezer, then I look/wait for a big rack. In 2000 I took a buck that made pope&young (131 7/8) so now I wont shoot a buck unless it is darn close or bigger than that.

Four points or better, at least until there is some meat in the freezer (here in MS, a buck has to have 4 points or more to be legal).

I like to read, so I subscribe to a bunch of magazines. The quickest way to get me to trash one, is for them to start talking about how many points a rack would score, or some obscure "delta one" tine, or some such crap. I wonder how many hunters wrap their balls around a buck's "score"?
I wish they would remove any mention of the human in a pope&young or boone&crockett record book. It ought to be about the animal. People who hunt for "score" are in the woods for the wrong reason. |
RE: What do you guys look for in a buck
I personally look for tender meat, either sex. Tell you the truth, my pride would love a big buck, but I was taught as a child that hunting was for putting food on the table, and hunting for sport was just killing. This isn't a troll, just commenting on my upbringing.

Four legs, breathing, and close! Hell he does not have to have four good legs even. Closer the better! Meat hunter! Meat!

I agree about taking the humans name out of the books! It IS about recognizing the animal! I hunt for meat...THEN I wait for decent horns. Luckly I live in a state where you can get all the tags you want/need so meat is filled first with a doe tag, then wait for a nice buck. NO sense to me in killing a small buck, when it can be left to grow and get bigger! Now if I needed meat and had no does in the freezer and it was the last day of season I might take a smaller buck. Not sure if John Nails post was aimed at me or not!? But...

My post was not aimed at you. This "Score" thing is just one of my many pet peeves. I freely admit to being a testy old curmudgeon. I firmly believe that ANY animal I kill with my stickbow is a trophy. I believe an old, wise doe is just as cagey as a buck. And I believe a lot of people are in the woods for the wrong reason. |

I'm looking for the dumbest one in the woods. If it happens to have a good rack, so much the better.

I look for mass, tine length and number of points. I`d like to make a comment about leaving out the hunter`s name from record books. How could you tell which deer was scored? You have to have a name to identify the animal not just "the buck that scores 157 1/8".

RE: What do you guys look for in a buck
I am also out for meat. Having said that, I would love to shoot a "book buck." However, that is not my primary objective when I go in the woods. If it happens so beit, if not, so beit.
I also would like to see the human names removed from the books. We are glorifying the man, not the animal. Just list it like this: Date, County, State, score. |
RE: What do you guys look for in a buck
I always look for a buck that don't have spots on it. I sure would like to kill a really nice buck though. I have killed several 6 pointers, a few 7 pointers, and one 8 pointer, but none of them were real big. Last year I killed a doe in Tennessee before our season opened in Alabama. Then I killed one opening day and one the next weekend. I decided to hunt the rest of the season for a big buck. I found out later in the season that one of the land owners that lets me hunt wanted one to eat. I killed a 7 pointer for him and then hunted the rest of the season for "the big buck." I saw lots of does and little bucks but no big buck.

RE: What do you guys look for in a buck
Dan, I sat with Glenn and Jay for a good while one year at Cloverdale discussing "Modern" bowhunting and the P&Y book.

RE: What do you guys look for in a buck
Glenn's the man!!! I wish Jay was around.....guess I'll have to set that one up for the next trip down! Maybe this time I can bring some moose steaks along. Susan and Rocky (SP) his two daughters where there. I am still in awe of his place, I just wish it wasnt moving!
I didnt talk the P&Y book with Glenn however. It would be interesting to hear what he has to say considering he is the founder, and how he feels the direction it has gone. After the morning in his shop and a couple hours with him, I bet I can guess or be resonably close! The other thing that blows my mind is the many bowhunters that arent even aware of just who he is! http://www.geocities.com/tradbow007/...dventures.html |
