Default ** 8-6** food plots update with Round Up Ready crops

You might remember - our plot program is running about 2-3 weeks behind for corn & soybeans. Our clover plot is coming in good. Here are a couple pictures:

Corn - July 9th - 1 week after Spraying Roundup

Same corn plot July 25th:

Same corn plot - another angle 7-25:

Soybeans - July 9th - 1 week after spraying:

Same Plot - July 25th:

another picture same soybean pics- closeup:

Last - Clover plot 7/25 - you can still see some Ragweed in it - but as long as we keep it mowed - it cannot reseed - and will die back all the way after this winter.

Last year at this time - our corn was head high and the soybeans were much more "full" - but I still have good hopes for these plots this summer. The pictures only show a couple fields, in fact there are 2 more corn plots and 3 more soybean plots between 1/2 and 2 acres. The clover plot is a little more than 2 acres - and we are planting a 3/4 acre Brassica & clover plot this weekend (sprayed grass 7/4). I'll post pictures of this plot later on.

FH
- Thanks for the update and pics.
- Do you expect to have a problem with corn borer?Or is that Bt corn? Myfirst corn foodplot was planted "late" (4 June)because the local farmer kept telling me he'd get to it "next week". That year, 95% of the ears were damaged by borer - still, the deer didn't mind.

Sean, I see you planted the middles again on the beans, cheaper than buying another planter, Like I told you before, we did it for a few years,, works o.k. ,especially for RR beans,

FH, don't you love the roundup ready crops. What date did you plant your corn compared to last year? I remember you had some nice cobs last year. I just checked at http://foodplot.blogspot.com/. You planted on may 28th. I planted on the 29th because of all the rain. the variety I planted tends to grow tall. I hope it matures as good as it did last year.

mlo -

I do love RR crops - I'm really thinking of RR Canola next year - if I can find it. I'd like to see RR Sunflowers and clover too - but I'm not sure we ever will.

Our May 28th planting was later than we wanted - and it was soooooo wet for the first month and my soil does not drain well. - we lost some seed as a result - some places are pretty thin. Last year - we planted about May 15th.

LAST YEAR on 7-24-05 our corn & soybeans looked like this:

But - overall I'm happy with this year's results.Without round up - and usingcultivation only - I'd not have a chance with corn this year.

Ron -

Thanks for the tip on the Soybean planting. We are going to try to over seed Rye or Winter Wheat on a plot this Sept - to see how that does. I'll let you know.

fshfly2 -

One year our Sweet Corn had really bad worms - but they were non-
existant on the "cow corn" planted right next to it. I'm not to worried about it right now. I expect the next two weeks growth will tell whether the corn plot will fill out like we hope - I have good hopes for two of the three plots -the thrid was just too wet - and probably will not make it.

bspenser -

Round up beans - were about $30.00 per 40 lb bag at my co-op - the corn was $125.00 I think for a bag. (40 lbs = 80,000 kernals per bag)

I'll post back in a couple weeks -

FH
