Mech head practice

OK I need to shoot my mech heads here before turkey starts. I heard dental floss is supposed to keep them closed. What about 12# test fishing line? I will be shooting them into a block target. Would I be better off shooting them into a cheapo 2" wal mart target? does it matter?

Last year I used the cheap walmart target because I knew whatever I was going to shoot at was going to get shredded. I simply bought one set of replacement blades and shot a group of mixed field points and broadheads. Just make sure you are shooting the broadheads first in the group so you don't end up slicing vanes off. I typically used 2x broadhead tipped arrows and 2x field point tip arrows in the groups and if they grouped the same at all ranges (they did) then I didn't practice with them anymore and replaced the blades and saved them for hunting season to start.

You're going to shred a target whether you've got the blades tied down or not. I watched a guy last season tear a Block to pieces over the course of a week and he had his blades tied down. Really, I think tying down the blades is tougher on the target than letting the blades open, because the closed blades tear the foam instead of cutting cleanly. I'd second the motion of just buying a set of replacement blades and letting the heads do what they're meant to do while practicing.

OK thanks guys, my block is already shredded pretty good from fixed blades. I just thought tying the blades down was what you where supposed to do. And I learned long ago to never shoot more than one broadhead at a time.

I tried the tie down trick with some Rocket heads and it broke one of the little arms that helpds the blade expand clean off. Last time I'll do that. I've tried changing the blades on my mechanicals in the past but that is just a lesson in frustration. Now I just use old mechanicals to practice with.
