nocks

I understand they can be to tight...pretty simple...but too loose? My dang arras are almost falling off the string when they are held on the bow pointed down, if I move, even think of moving, they fall off!!! Using .21 spectra..maybe I need to get up to the .25 stuff?

Dont know if this will work for you, I've warmed and softened knocks with a hair dryer before, and just pinched them a little tighter.

guess it was a stupid question....picked up some .025 spectra serving, will let yall know if it works...any other ideas on nocks being to loose being a problem? I know I started really wrenchin on the nock as I drew (finger shooter) causing some seriously unconsistent shooting...past couple days have been fine but I wonder if it couldnt be even that much better?

well heck, let me ask this...is ANYBODY concerned with how tight/loose there nocks are?

Oh Ya, it does matter. Depending on what type of string material you are using, and the number of strands your string is made of, will dictate what serving diameter you should use. You don`t ever want it so loose that it can slide around on your string. Conversely, you don`t want to have to use two hands to pop it off of your string, either!

RE: nocks

so what are the effects of it being to loose? Heck mine right now barely stays on! I havent had the chance to shoot with the .025 serving yet....looking forward to it!

Dan, there is a new product that is just now hitting the market.Magnock arrow nocks are the newest idea in archery evolution that practically eliminates arrow shaft flexing that causes planing and inaccuracy down range. The Magnock arrow nock system is designed to work in conjunction with a magnetic receiver mounted on the bowstring and a special arrow nock that attracts to the magnet. This system has been going through years of development to make sure it can withstand the stresses from thousands of shots off compound bows of all manufacturers. Every nock on the market today requires anywhere from 22 oz. to 87 oz. of pull force to release off the bowstring with a variance up to 30 oz. on the same nock (increasing with colder temperatures and decreasing with warmer temperatures). The Magnock system releases with 4.5 oz. every time with 0 oz. of variance no matter what the conditions are, cold, hot, dry or wet. It will hold a 575 grain arrow without premature disengagement while shaking it up and down.

im not sure if you can use these on your stick arrows but might be worth looking into.

RE: nocks

OK, here are a couple of effects from your nock being loose.
1.If the string is not seated firmly in the throat of the nock, when you drop the string, the force of the string slamming into the nock throat can cause the nock to be blown apart. Pretty similar to a dry fire. Most bows won`t take a ton of those.
2.When you draw your bow, your arrow could slip off of the string, or be pinched off the string. If I remember correctly, you are a traditional archer, which means two things.
1.You probably hold your arrow on better because you shoot with fingers instead of a mechanical release.
2.You probably have more money to go on more hunting trips, because you don`t waste your money on all those stupid gadgits and gizmos like I do.

RE: nocks

LOL thanks guys!

I noticed myself pinching my nocks to keep them on the string..well in doing so I was really torquing the arrow (ya not the bow the arrow) We video'd me shooting one nite and man oh man could you see it on the tube!!! Well I thought I had it whooped till the other nite. Been shooting pretty much everyday if nothing more then a few arras in the house to hour and hours at the range. One of my arras started flying funky and dang if the nock wasnt trashed, I think it was something similar to your nocking coming unseated and slamming into the nock damaging it. Needless to say I pulled it off! all be danged if it didnt come off with my finger tips and a mod pull! Guess I was lucky that one didnt blow.

I was wondering if to loose of nocks can effect accuracy? I know to tight of ones will cause bad arra flight directly influencing groups! I have been shooting great the past couple nites so I cant complain...but every once in awhile I catch myself grabbing hold of that nock to keep the arra on and every once in awhile I feel something odd when I shoot, and get some seriously wild arra flight. I figured that was my nocks slipping. I didnt get to shoot today or yesterday for that matter, with that new .025 spectra but I will tomorrow...cant wait, besides I need to get out of this stinkn house! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>!

Thanks for the idea Akbowhunter but that would be almost to the extent of tying on a 10ft stabalizer LOL! All joking aside I went trad cuz it was simple and fun. Well there are things we do have to mantain and this is one of the many that trad folks seem to overlook. We always harp to tight but rarely do I hear to loose.....I'll keep ya posted to what happens, I am sure I can guess but I wont till I get the hands on....later

RE: nocks

Lil' one of the things I've noticed with too loose a nock is that I can't shoot with my most effective grip. I use a Mediterranean grip (split finger). When doing so, I try to avoid even touching the nock with my index finger and barely put any pressure on the nock with my middle finger. This gives me the most consistent release. If my nocks are too loose, I have difficulty keeping them on the string using this type grip (a sure sign of time to replace or tighten the nock.)
