Left-eye dominant/right handed
I am cross dominant (left eye/right hand). As a beginning archer, should I learn to shoot left handed since I am left eye dominant, or should I learn to shoot right handed since I am right handed? I don't have much experience shooting either way, so I wouldn't have to "unlearn" anything. Thanks.

RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
Well there wont be many as qualified to answer this question than me. I am left handed but right eye dominant. For years I always shot a gun right handed and a bow left handed. About 4 years ago I finally switched to shooting a bow right handed and have never looked back.
I would say start shooting left handed and you wont be sorry! Except for the fact that bows will be harder to buy and harder to re sell than right handed bows! |
RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
that is true i am a lefty myself trying to find bows is a task
i dont know what to say as far a left eye/right handed i got lucky i guess i'm left/left. good luck otto |
RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
Shoot which feels more natural to you
if you feel more comfortable shooting left handed then that is the way you should shoot and simply close youre right eye when shooting or even wear a patch if you have to you will eventually train youre left eye to become dominant. you will hear from some that if you are right eye dominant you should shoot right handed that is fine if that is what you want to do however if you do not feel comfortable or it feels un natural to shoot that way you shouldnt it is far easier to train your eye to become dominant than it is to re learn how to shoot a bow. |
RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
That's what I was thinking, try RH with left eye closed and LH with both eyes open and see which one feels more natural for you.

RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
i shoot right handed and am left eye dominant. i shoot both eyes open and it's no issue with me at all. i use a no peep, not sure if that makes a difference. it took me about a day to get used to both eyes open. just because you may be one eye dominant doesn't mean you can't see out of the other eye. i don't know, maybe some of you are much more 1 eye dominant than me.

RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
I am left eye dominant and right handed also. I shoot with both eyes open with a peep site. I can shoot very well. I have no problem. I shot with my left eye closed for a couple of monthes. I then tried shooting with both eyes open. It took a little time for my right eye to focus, but once it did, I was a better shot. I would never go back to shooting with one eye. I also shoot a right handed bow.

RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
I was in the same shoe four years ago. Except I'm oposite, lefty/right eye dominant. I just shoot right-handed (gun & bow). Didn't even know I was lefty. :D

RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
I have the same thing as you. Left eye dominant and right handed. I shot a gun right handed until i was going to start deer hunting, and it took some getting used to. Now i shoot my bow and guns left handed and the only problem i have is that finding a left handed gun or bow is usually pretty tough to do. Thats why i bought a Mathews. I would say definatly shoot left handed. My dad and older brother are the same way. My dad nows shoots a bow left handed, and gun right handed. He wishes he would have shot southpaw all along.

RE: Left-eye dominant/right handed
Hey, me too. I'm left eye dominant and I shoot a long gun left handed, a pistol right handed, and my bow right handed. This is just what is comfortable to me. I have no problems with any of these weapons. I grew up shooting right handed guns left handed and am used to it, so no problems except for trigger gaurd safetys on some shotguns. It is a little tough clicking the safety off when wing shooting, but I have it down. When I shoot my bow, my right eye somehow takes over when the string comes to my eye. I use a No-peep with both eyes open with no trouble. The pro shop owner in my area thinks I'm a freak because of this and is a little P.O'ed I beat her in winter hunters league last winter. She goes to tournaments all summer and brings home hardware, so she is an excellent spot shooter and knows her stuff, so if you are out there, you know who you are S, I beat you by one point!!!! Na Na Na Na! My opinion would be to shoot how it is most comfortable.
