low profile vane causing flight problems?
I am having problems with arrow flight at twenty yards and up with fixed broadheads but with field tips I have great groups. I have purchased mechanical broadheads to hunt with and they fly true. I would prefer to use muzzy four blade but I can't figure out my problem. I have paper tested my set up with a bare shaft and I get bullet holes all the way to fifteen yards. The only thing I have narrowed it down to is my fletching. I am using easton 2314 superslam selects 28'',60 lb draw, qs biscuit, a flex fletch 400 low profile vane straight fletched with a 100g 4 blade muzzy broadhead. I have also tried a 125g 3 and 4 blade with the same results. I am wondering if I have my vanes put on with a right helical will this cure my fishtailing or should I change to a different style vane. Sorry so long.

RE: low profile vane causing flight problems?
you will never get the arrow to stabelize with strait fletch with a low profile vane you will need to put as much helix in the fletch as you can and still will not get very good arrow flight with a 4 blade muzzy but will work fine if you want tp continue using mechanicals
I would recommend using a bhoning blazer vane on a off set or helical for fixed Broad heads. The Flex Fletch is just not tall enough to catch enough wind to stabelize Fixed heads but the bohnings will work Great! |
RE: low profile vane causing flight problems?
I wish I would have worded my questions the way your worded yours. It took me several monthes to figure out I needed a helical. I bought some Bohning vanes and put a hard right helical on the. I can hit the same target all day with a helical arrow and broadheads.

I agree you need helical fletching to stabilize your arrows. Straight won't do the job with fixed blade heads, unless your setup is perfect, and very few are.
