Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Until recently (when I finally set my NP) I was shooting good groups, just sometimes left, sometimes right, etc. I wasn't worried, as I was more interested in arrow flight and felt confident it would all come together when I was done tuning, sighting in, etc.
Read this article this morning that made a lot of sense and most likely explained alot of what was happening- http://www.spot-hogg.com/newsletter_12.htm Exact and repeatable hand placement on the bow is so critical to consistent accuracy. I've found that even with my NP dead on, while the left and rights are pretty much gone, I can get high fliers if I put too palm pressure on the riser. I plan to try the glove as they recommend to assist the bow into settling where it wants, as generally I shoot with a bare hand, even in the woods. Just need to find a glove now. I'd hate to buy a new one, as I have a ton, but they're never around when you need them :) |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Try a pair of silk glove liners.

Does your wife have any I can borrow?
:) |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
What makes you think me wife has a pair?

RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Apparently lame attempt at silk garments worn by a man humor...
|
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Gotta :D, anyway silk is a very good wicker of perspiration. I have a few sets ofunderwear that I have. You can even get them in camo and they make a great warm weather shirt by themselves.

RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
I have also found that the No Peep is very criticle to hand pressure, not just torque. May give you fits to begin with, but in the end it will make you a better shot.
Good luck, Paul |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
What kind of bow are you shooting and what is the ATA and brace height?
I had a Champion Titan that was unbelievably fricken critical to hand placement. I'm not exactly sure what it was about that bow that made it so unforgiving because I've shot several bows since then with the same ATA and the same brace height that weren't nearly as bad. I have found that my bows with 37" ata or longer and brace heights over 7" are much more forgiving to hand placement and thats what I look for now in a hunting bow. I want something I can grab with my goretex gloves on when it's 20 below and not think twice about my grip.:D |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Try an after market grip, like a Loesch (spelling?). You can get them in any configuration you want from high wrist, mid wrist, low wrist. I've been thinking of trying on myself.

RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
I had a Champion Titan that was unbelievably fricken critical to hand placement I never had a problem with it really though?? String sucked and NEVER quit stretching but once replaced it was fine. I did take the stock grip off and wrapped a rope grip for it to fit though too. Hell I shot spots with it for a season and, while I sucked, it was me and not the bow I think. |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Exact and repeatable hand placement on the bow is so critical to consistent accuracy. I want something I can grab with my goretex gloves on when it's 20 below and not think twice about my grip. With such a setup, your hand naturally and automatically slides into exactly the same position each and every time you grap the bow, especially if you use talcum powder on your bowhand or use a slick glove. It's almost impossible to torque that kind of rig. Of course, you get a higher brace height so the chrony numbers aren't nearly as impressive, but I prefer having the shooting qualities instead of the excess speed. ;) The Hoyt ProVantage/SuperSlam risers are still my all time favorites because they're SO easy to shoot well. |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Deflex riser + 65% or less letoff + smooth hard plastic or wood, HIGH WRIST grip. With such a setup, your hand naturally and automatically slides into exactly the same position each and every time you grap the bow My Diamond Hornet has two thin side plates on a thin riser. If I consistently put my hand in the high wrist position, I'm fine. It just doesn't have the palm swell to remind me to do so. I like the feeling of contact the palm swell provides. Not grabbing it, it's just naturally resting against my hand so I know it's there, makes me steadier, like balancing on one foot is easier if you have a finger touching a wall or something. I looked into a custom grip, but I'd have to send them my bow to do so, and I'd rather put the $50-60 towards a new bow next year... maybe :) |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
I've got a chunk of mesquite heartwood out in the garage that's dying to become something useful. One of these days, I'm gonna drag out my Dremel tool and make myself a high wrist custom grip for my ProTec. If I can ever lay off whittling on my stickbows. ;)

RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Range, Thanks so much for posting this article. I've been skimming over this thread and finally read it. I needed it.
I like the layout of the article and how easy it reads. Plus the information inside might just help me out of a recent slump I've found myself in. My groups at 20 are money with both fp and fixed blades. I finally found time to step back to 30 with fixed blades and :(. Not good. Last years set up I was at 1" groups at 30. Lets just say I'm not there with my new rig- yet. I was scamming on what to try next, but I think I will try this glove trick first. Then I'll go into moving my rest in and out. I can't believe my opener is next weekend and I'm still tweaking[:@], can I buy some time? I think I'll go read some more of those easy to read articles! |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
BTW, I think a lot of my problem is I'm using my backup release which is a tad longer than my primary Truball which got sent back last week so they could remove the gap in the jaws when in the closed position.
I WANT MY RELEASE BACK[&o]. That and the fact that my secondary pin (which sits in front of the black primary pins post) on my savage pendulum pretty much covers the target at 30 yards[&o]. |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Dave, glad you found it helpful.
Couldn't come up with a jersey glove, so I grabbed a storm cloth glove I bought last year that is water/windproof. Not sure what it's made of, but it's really slick and form fitting :) I had shot several shots earlier this am, same issue, impact was non-consistent, depending on hand placement. By non-consistent I should point out that group size was around 2.5" at 25 yards. Slipped the glove on, went to pull arrow from target. Figured out real quick the glove was slick :) Walked back to 25 yards (max I can shoot indoors where I'm set up), set high wrist, draw letting bow settle where it wants, anchor, NP is perfectly lined up, aim release. Pulled arrow, repeated. Holy Crap, would have been a robin hood if I would've shot a second arrow. Proceeded to stack arrow after arrow into a nickel size spot. I'm still smiling like this :D It was an amazing difference. Give this a shot if you don't already, I highly recommend it. Bow just settles into the same spot in my hand with no effort on my part. Made a big difference for me. |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
I just scent free washed a pair of gloves 2 days ago that should work out perfectly. Now I just need to get home and give it a whirl.
Come on 16:30 ! |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Forgot to add, I shoot a Savage Pendulum also, with the one pin. I had always assumed my 2-3" grouping was due to the .03" pin size, even contacted Savage awhile back to see if I could get a smaller pin, but they don't make them.
This experience has proven to me that as long as I get the same sight picture, it's hand placement, not pin size, provided the sight's adjusted properly. Of course this is for a hunting bow, would probably be different if I were trying to hit an itty bitty spot with money on the line :) |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
I can do well with the primary pin. But the way the secondary pin sits on a Savage it is directly in front of the post that hold the primary AND it is a piece of fiber optic with the end burnt into a small blob. This covers up my circles on my target. So I tried just aiming for 20 and letting the arrows fall below, but it wasn't any good either.
You right about the hunting bow part, that's why I use a pendulum. I'm just trying to make sure if a 30 yard shot on a pig presents itself my BH tipped arrow will land true. I know I'll get this figured out before season, I just hate sitting here helpless when I could be tweaking. |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
I assume you are talking about a ground level shot of 30 yards? Have you tried seeing how much kentucky windage it takes and ditching the secondary pin?
How fast are you shooting? At 278 fps, I can get 0-33 yards with my pendulum from a tree. I have my pin set for dead on at 25 yards ground level. By aiming a tad high, I can hit 30 on level ground fairly easy... |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Yeah, I've got a ground blind hunt booked for early December and need an extra pin for further out there. If I can wrestle this bow to good groups at 30 I may set it for 35.
Aiming at w/ 20 pin at thirty I'd say there is at least 5-6" drop. My slowbow is only spitting them at 265fps:(. (on my slower than most chrony) |

RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
i tried this experiment today and hated it. my jersey glove didn't slide at all, not at all. just a suggestion, get a slicker glove than a jersey.

RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Tried the glove and it wasn't my cure. I moved my rest in and out and recorded the best groups at 30 to pinpoint which centershot was working best. Then I shot through paper again, reduced the amount of cord for the pull on my drop zone and reacheived a bullet. Stepped back to 30 and still no dice[:'(]. Crappy group.
I'm close to panic mode. Tommorow I'm gonna try newer arrows(not just my year round practice ones), different target (I hate circles[:'(] ) and shooting through the paper further back. If none of that works I'm gonna stop by a new proshop on the way home from the lease on Monday and let a PRO look at it. I've had it :(. Only problem with that is I'm good at 20 and that's as far as their range is. I know it's something simple, maybe it's me? Maybe I'm asking too much. I've achieved 1.5" groups at 30 yards while shooting fixed blades with last years rig, I'm having a hard time not even being able to do that with my NEW rig and f/p's.[:'(] |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Any chance you're:
1- Dropping your bow arm are at the shot, not following through? 2- Grabbing the bow at the shot? 3- Punching the trigger? For some reason, from 25 in I seem automatic. Get past 25, and I can suffer from the above unless I pay strict attention to detail. Don't know why, it just happens... |
RE: Suffering from inconsistent accuracy?
Range, I went to the "pro" shop and he wasn't much help. Asked me if I set it up and said I got it all right (center shot, nock point, drop zone timing).
He fiddled with the center shot a little and then we shot through paper. It was the same - somewhat of a bullet I had been looking at. I went home with some hope and no-dice at 30. I've been over tweaking the past 3 days and have come up with 1.5-2" groups at 30 yards using muzzy 100 3 blades. In this configuration my 20 yard shots are left of POA.:( Weird thing is if I fling a phantom or a muzzy 100 4 blade they fly terrible, I bet they are in the 4" group range. It's so bad I don't even measure[:'(]. What's so odd about that is the 4 blade muzzies usually fly great for me. To answer your questions- 1- well maybe, but I doubt it- I'll pay more attention to that tomorrow. 2- no need with the Patriot, it just sits there 3- got my tru-ball back and have been paying attention to steady trigger pressure. I've got another week to get this right, I'm gonna be real upset if I have to use my trusty Z-light back up for hunting. I shot it at 30 just to check and sure enough- ON. Thanks for the help, time to start a new thread, I'm desperate[&o]. |
