10 yard pin
I was just wondering how many people have a 10 yard pin for hunting. I have one and was thinking about moving it to 20 then my other two pins will be at 30 and 40. All i do is hunt with this bow so what do you think about this idea

RE: 10 yard pin

RE: 10 yard pin
Edmund,
I have two hunting bows and I don't use a 10 yd. setting anymore. I found, I was in the kill zone using my 20 yd. pin at 10 yds. whether from a tree stand or level ground. So why bother. I like the 20,30,40 settings you refered to much better. Sag. |
RE: 10 yard pin
I don't see much need in them anymore with the new bows

RE: 10 yard pin
I don't think you need one. But I don't have a clue how your bow shoots either. What's the difference in point of impact using the 2 pins at 10 yards? This will tell you what to do at shots under 20 if you don't have a 10 pin.
I'm set at 25,35,45. I couldn't do that with my older bow. I only hunt as well. "Hunt smart, know your target and beyond" |
RE: 10 yard pin
I use my 20 yd pin, and hold over half the space between my arrow on the rest and the 20 yd pin. The only time I bother is on those short targets you get at some shoots. Some folks get confused by those and don't know where to hold. You are only holding over an inch or two , so I guess it might not matter much in the field.

RE: 10 yard pin
No 10 yard pin for me. I use a 15 25 35 45 yards pins for my setup and I only hunt.

RE: 10 yard pin
I have not had a 10 yard pin since my bear whitetail hunter bow! I use one pin, set around 25 yards. I get confused by any more during hunting situations.
TAKE YOUR KIDS HUNTING AND YOU WON'T BE HUNTING FOR YOUR KIDS |
RE: 10 yard pin
I just use a 20, 30, 40 yard pins

RE: 10 yard pin
Actually, on my hunting bow, I have a 7 yard pin, 18 yard pin, and a 28 yard pin. Sounds a little silly, but I won't shoot past 28 yards, so nothing further is needed. I like my seven yard because I can put the pins dead on on a close in shot.
On my traditional bow - no pins!!!!!!!!!!!! |
RE: 10 yard pin
Generally the impact difference between a 10 & 20 yd pin is not very much. This will also depend on your poundage and arrow speed. My girlfriend is only pulling low-30# range, so she has a 10,20,and 30 pin. The difference between a 10 & 20 yd pin was not nearly enough to warrant another pin for my setup.
The impact differences between a 10 and 20 yd pin will also depend on your individual setup: you anchor point, peep height, and sight bar length. You have your line of sight to target, arrow trajectory to target, and the arrow launch position in releation to you eye. It's good to know these values- try shooting at a target 3yds away and you'll see what I mean. You'll most likely have to use a longer range pin to hit a target that close. The apex of the sight/trajectory curve is usually (depends on the individual) 10-12 yds. When you get closer than that, you start needing to use longer range pins because of the difference between line of sight and arrow launch trajectory. It's good to know where you need to aim for those real short distance shots- you may be surprised at what you find! Edited by - Black Frog on 02/28/2002 09:59:32 |
RE: 10 yard pin
I forgot to add I am pulling back 57 pounds.

RE: 10 yard pin
I use a ten yard pin for turkies. it works from 5-15 yds It's really is just what makes you the most comfortable, experiment with it a bit and find what works best for you.

RE: 10 yard pin
20-35-50 for my bow, but i still have to work on my 50 as its shooting too high.

RE: 10 yard pin
There really isn't much use for a 10 yd pin. Move it to 20yds and so on! Do yourself a favor and shoot 10 yds with your bow to figure where you need to be for that distance. Don't just put your 20yd pin on it thinking that you can aim just a little low. You will know what I mean if you are shooting a 3-D and have to shoot from say 5 yds or 7yds. I have seen many a steel target for bonus points eat new shafts that have been shot with the 20yd pin holding just a little low!
Shoot straight! |
RE: 10 yard pin
Has anyone tried to shoot from a treestand at 5 yards and then at 20? I have, that's why I leave a 7 yard pin on. That way I don't have to play the compensation games.

RE: 10 yard pin
This is one reason why I don't use sights on my hunting bows. Too confusing!

RE: 10 yard pin
But Art, we're using bows where you can't see the arrow in flight... :)

RE: 10 yard pin
Hmmm... How do you envision the trajectory on that which can't be seen? Would that be called poke-n-hope aiming or squint-n-pray aiming???
I'll have to get back to ya on that'n! |
