GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
I just don't know what to think of all the nonsense lately. I have been more or less a Hoyt-only person for some time now. Most other brands have not really interested me. I can't buy one of everything anyway like some seem to be able to do (because I actually like being married). Studied and deliberated forever last year and ended up with a Vortec w/ redline cam. Shot the bow reasonably well, but never great. Made it through the season with it, took 3 deer ... but decided I was not satisfied. (if anyone wants a nice Vortec, contact me <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>) Started looking at this year's models. Shot a Havoctec and I must tell you it shot like a dream, much better than I would have expected. I began scheming on shooting the Cybertec and then making the decision between the two. And THEN, here we go .... Frank defects to try something new <img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>... All this talk about Bowtech this and Bowtech that, I began to read with interest. Patriot comes along and everyone was singing the praises. Had never even seen a Bowtech bow in person, but learned of a dealer a mere 40 miles away. Went down today and what did he have? A brand spanking new Patriot with infinity cam, still in the box. Though I didn't have time to shoot it today, I was able to draw it and generally scope it out real good. I gotta tell you my perceptions. There are a lot of discussions on here about quality of this bow and that bow and on and on ... never gave all that a lot of thought. On this point, however, the Bowtech really surprised me. Overall fit and finish of the Patriot I looked at is a notch above my Vortec. Absolutely NO gaps on either sides of the cam or idler, limb pockets and limbs all matched up perfectly, limbs and risor machined out perfectly, dipped finish without a flaw I could see, Winners Choice string and cable ... couldn't find a thing I didn't like. Will be shooting it Monday or Tuesday and most likely purchasing it (regardless of dealer protectionism or hidden warranty exclusions <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>). I probably said a lot here to not say much of anything, but was compelled to relay my perceptions on the apparent quality.

Forgot to add that, as many have reported, I didn't love the grip. It's not the best, but not the worst either and I can probably adapt. Okay, I will shut up now....:)

RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
We set the hook on another one guys! Just kidding.. BowTech does put alot of time and money into making a very high quality bow. One thing that stands out to me is the fact that they are the only bow company using Winner's Choice strings versus all the others they could use but don't. They figure why put a $5.00 string on such a top notch bow. All the components are very high quality for a better fit and finished product.

RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
But does it come in 33" draw???

But does it come in 33" draw??? <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> Arthur, They don't have 33" draw as far as I know..the PRO-40 goes to 32". W/ the Infnity cam you could make it do 33" but it would have about 90% letoff, and have a valley an inch wide (which might be right up your alley..hee hee). Of course you could shoot a loop and shot the riser (which I suspect most people would rather do anyways..that would put you in the 33" neigborhood w about 70-75% letoff. JeffB :) |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
I've played the game of using long loops and modifying my form and this and that in order to shoot a shorter draw. My true draw is really 34", but am able to get comfy at 33. I've come to realize that 32 is just too short. I can shoot that short pretty well at times, but do rotten at other times. Can't stand the inconsistency.
Looks like I've dodged a bullet! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Arthur,
Wow...34"..I thought 33" was your true draw w/out the loop! I think Martin still makes some 34" draw bows don't they? And PSE's custom shop could build you one I'm sure on one of the less expensive risers like the Dakota (though they charge about a hundred and fifty smackeroos on top of the base model) I think Reflex is making the Caribou again this year (The 46" e-wheel bow that Chuck Adams shot for awhile)..they might make 34" and they are (or were) under $500. And you must have to shoot a 80" longbow to keep it from stacking! I also know of a shop around here that has some old (new) Super Slam Legacy's and Super Stars that might be 33-34" (Control cams I believe..possibly E-wheels on some). They don't have an archery guy working there anymore, and are a bit "stuffy", but if you are interested I can stop by sometime, take a look at em for ya in more detail, and ask If they would ship one out to ya. If they had some shorter draw models, I would have bought one by now for a finger shooting bow. JeffB :) |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
I'm pretty sure Wheeler Archery makes a bow or two with a 33" and 34" draw. I'm not sure if it's the single cam (they license form BowTech) or his dual cam design. Maybe worth looking in to for that long of a draw.
|
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Yeah...and don't forget Hoyt still makes several bows that go up to a 33 or 34 inch draw length...and I think one even goes up to 35!!
Winger, I am going to save my comments on this for another thread entirely....my bow buying has taken a completely different turn as of today......looooonnnngggg story...but I will post about it shortly. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Jeff, I started shooting 33" about 15 years ago and have gotten used to it, so to avoid confusion, I just say my draw is 33". I did shoot 34" for years before that but 34 inchers got kinda rare. Pro shops loved fixing up arrows for me, 'cause they didn't even have to turn on the cutting saw. Just glue an insert into a full length shaft and that was it. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Martin's okay, but PSE? I get a rash when I pick up a PSE. I've got a Legacy that I picked up in a pawn shop for $50 that I'm going to stick some #3 Accuwheels on to experiment with, but I'm always looking to find a long draw bow. Wouldn't hurt to check on those bows. I don't much like the control cam, but if he's got any E-wheeled Legacy's I might be interested. Randy Dehnel at Saxon fixed me up with a 66" Mongoose that drew sweet out to 32" (that's what I draw on a longbow). My 72" selfbow stacks like a deck of cards though. Gonna have to find me a taller tree if I ever make another. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I like hearing Reflex might be making the Caribou again. I think it's a good thing because I'm running into a lot of people on the forums that are getting interested in shooting fingers again, and there aren't many decent fingers bows out there right now. Frank, you know how I am about shooting bows that are shorter than my draw length, and how I am about buying bows that are bigger than my bank account. :) If I could get Hoyt to put LXPro limbs on a MagnaTec... But I hear they won't do a custom setup like that any more. Bow_Tech Shooter, I've heard vague rumors about Wheeler, but I've never seen one of his bows. Does he have a website? |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Arthur,
Start saving your spare change and order a Bowman. Stewart bulds them for virtually any knuckle dragger around. Stewart has a 34" draw too. He's a giant of a man; looks like an NFL lineman. Sag. |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Frank,
What is it? What is it?? Now you have me really curious! Winger |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Winger,
I don't want to let too much of the proverbial "cat" out of the bag yet...but just so nobody thinks I defected and bought a Mathews Legenza or something...I did still buy a Bowtech...I just don't want to post about it until I have had enough time to get a feel for the bow. |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Hey Pabowhunter,
I tought for sure you were going to say you bought a Merlin, could of bet my Christening money on it. |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Polack,
I have never even seen a Merlin let alone shot one....so the chance of my buying one is slim to none. Once they get more dealers in my immediate area, so that I can get a feel for the bow, then I will take a long hard look at the Merlins. Oh, Winger, don't go buying anything just yet...give me a little bit to relate my experiences...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |

RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Frank is being a bit cryptic for a reason..and I don't even have the full story, but he seems to be having a problem of some sort w/ the particular bow he bought (which I'll leave you guys guessing about! :) )
I don't wish to speculate here, as I said I don't know the full story...I pestered him via email, gave him some of my thoughts, and he was going out today to do some further evaluation and shooting. When he get's whatever the exact problem may be ironed out, he will let us all know, for better or worse. JeffB :) |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Jeff helped me out in regards to the minor problem I was having with the bow.
I apologize for being cryptic. It was not my intention. I am going to put something together to post about my experiences sometime in the next 24 hours...just bear with me. :) |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Frank, tell the truth, you got a Rascal didn't you!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I didn't think it came in a 55" draw length or whatever your monkey arms are pulling! It's ok, don't be ashamed.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Shot one of them new Patriots myself yesterday, and I also shot a couple of UltraTec's 2 day's before that. I have also shot a HavocTec, CyberTec, and a ProTec a while back in my quest for a new bow. I have come to the conclusion that my next bow will be the UltraTec. I shot one with the versa cam and cc+ side by side. I absolutely fell in love with the UltraTec w/cc+. The cc+ just felt much smoother to me than the versa cam did, a tad faster also. The only downfall of the cc+ is that you sacrifice a little brace height, 6 3/4" compared to 7" on the versa. But I did see that Bear stated it was 7 1/8" with the excel cam he ordered. I would really like to try a UltraTec with the excel cam before I make my final decsision. I did not want to go under 7" on the brace height, but that cc+ is just so sweet!! The CyberTec was also a sweet shooter but the BH was shorter than I wanted to go. The HavocTec was another sweet shooter but it was a little shorter bow (ATA)than I wanted. The ProTec was real smooth with really nice BH but seemed kind of slow compared to the UltraTec. Now the Patriot, the one thing it does have over the UltraTec is speed but that's it. I thought the UltraTec had a little less hand shock than the Patriot did. I known I'm probably going to catch a lot of hell for that statement, but I shot them both and that is what I thought. Also the Patriot was heavier, and I wasn't real fond of the grip either. Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing the Patriot, it's a sweet shooter, pretty fast too, but I personally like the UltraTec better. Hope I haven't offended anyone or pissed anybody off I'm just stating my own personal opinion, but when you get up into that price range of bows, their all really great bows, it just boils down to what feels best to you.

RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Smooch.....your personal preference in what you like in a bow better NOT "P" anybody off here.....(or it's 30 lashes with a Winner's Choice string!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>)
Glad to hear you like that Ultratec.....it's a sweet bow and probably what I'd be shooting for 3D..... if it wasn't for my "Pro38" of course.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Smooch,
If what you said offended anyone, it is their own problem. Oh, and ditto what Matt said .. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Imagine a 34" BKII...WOHOHOWOW! <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> Not too many McKenzies would stand up to 380+fps. No amount of Woody's lube would help pull those arrows. I'll be score keeper if we ever see the day. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
|
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Heck I've got BowTech in my blood and it didn't offend me any<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle> This sport wouldn't be as cool as it is without being able to choose from different equipment. I always tell people to try them all and make the decision for yourself and thats what you did.:)
|
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Hey Frank,
You have everyone wondering what you bought and I think Ebay might have let it out of the bag. If that was the bow you bought, what was the dislike with the bow? I am almost 58 years old and hunted with a gun all my hunting days until the last 3 years I started hunting with a bow. It's quite funny how this sport kind of grabs a hold of you and makes you want to get to some unmentionable level with new products the manufactures make. I am not sure we can get to this pinacle, but we sure are having fun trying. |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Yep...I guess he didn't like it...Oh well.. different strokes..
JeffB :) |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
I know your turmoil well Arthur. I am also a 33" draw. Bows these days are designd more for the average I guess. Oh well.
|
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Darn! Who was the one who brought Ebay into the picture??!!
There goes the "punch line" to my "new bow report". Now I am going to have to go back an reword it.....it will be posted shortly....<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Dang it Frank.....You cheaped out and bought a 2001!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
You're killing me here with what went wrong!? My 2001 is shooting incredible right now. What did you do to that poor bow!?<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Hmm...he either went back and got the Patriot they had, or because he wrote "new bow report" in quotes he might have bought another HavocTec..
he just sent me another "cryptic" email...hmmm..his report will be up soon He should be writing soap operas or 1930's Pulp Fiction...I feel like I'm at the end of this months Jon Carter in a "Black Pits of Mars" story.. JeffB :) |
RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
Yeah hurry up!!! My lunch hour is almost over and I can't wait til' 5:00......<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: GOSHDARNIT!!!!!
What a bunch of yahoos! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Give me a minute. This stuff takes time. I am finished writing and now I am just adding the pictures...
...did I mention that I was off "sick" from work today? <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> ...and the "new bow" report was referring to the Pro 38 not anything else so just give a guy a minute...<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> |
