Can I use a mechanical broadhead shooting 206 FPS/55 lb draw weight

Would a mechanical broadhead function properly only shooting 206 fps at a whitetail deer?

I would not recomend a mech.
But instead a good cut on contact instead.

I would highly recommend them for anything smaller than squirrels. Otherwise forget it.

What does your arrow weigh?

without knowing your exact KE I can't say for sure, but I would bet it is on the low side. I think you would probably be better off with a quality fixed blade head. Their are several on the market now that that fly very well and penetrate deep. The two new heads from NAP The Crossfire and Nitron, wasp boss bullet, Magnus stinger 85 grn all shoot just like field points and penetrate better than most other heads.

I think buckfevr might have hit on an interesting point. If your arrow weighs 400 grains and you are only getting 206 fps then you most certainly should not be using any mechanical head. However, if you are using an excessively heavy arrow...600 grains or more then your KE numbers may be higher.

Head to www.bowjackson.com and use his arrow weight calculator and KE calculator to help determine this.

OK guys, what KE is good for whitetails. I know how to figure it from all of the posts but what number should I try to get to for mechs. Maybe this will help out 1turkeykiller.

Anything under 55lbs is my personal limit for Mechanicals. Most Mechanical head mnfg. will say 50.

Thanks Trushot. I have searched this forum some and couldn't find anything. My son really wants to use mechs this fall. He is shoot 63lbs with a 27 in draw. I will be getting a weight on the arrows so I can compute the KE for him soon.:D
