Mathews Outback:

I thought the Outback shot better (with less recoil & vibration!), was faster, and quieter. |
RE: Mathews Outback
I brought my arrows that I shoot with my LX, which are Gold Tips XT's 55/75's with a 100gr field point and shot both bows one after another, the Mathews with that arrow, and field point was faster, than the Mighty Might, I had the shop owner set up his chrono, so I could see which one was faster, the Outback shot at 287fps, and the Mighty Might at 285fps! I shot a 29" arrow! You cannot tell by standing there, but 2fps difference does not make much of a difference, but there was a little gap! I don't know why, it shot faster, but it did!
Both bows were at 67#'s! The only difference, was, the Mighty Mite had a NAP Quicktune 3000, and the Outback has a MZE dropaway! |

RE: Mathews Outback
it seems to me that Mathews is going after Bowtech's new bows (trying to be better!) ! |
RE: Mathews Outback
There's a lot to Frank's point about the Mighty Mite VFT; I was thinking it looked more like the Liberty, but the specs may actually match up closer to the MM. What does the MM weigh, as far as comparisons go?
|
RE: Mathews Outback
mm vft mass weight 3lbs 8oz
ibo speed eating 314-322 fps |
RE: Mathews Outback
MQ1
The MMVFT weighs 3lbs 8 ozs |
RE: Mathews Outback
As far as speed goes........the Bowtech's advertised speed is without the hush kit ......correct ???
The BC speed is with the hush kit installed and is several fps less .........right ??? If you were to shoot an Outback with no string silencers and just relied on the string suppressors ......then the Outback would gain an advantage and put it close to/or above the same fps as a MM VFT(w/ hush kit) and faster than a Justice/Liberty(w/hush kit) ......while remaining quiet .....I think !! Where .....if you were to add additional string silencers to an Outback and take off the additional eliminator buttons on a Bowtech then the Bowtechs may jump ahead a few fps......I think !! I think I'm getting a headache now !! [8D]:D |
RE: Mathews Outback
ORIGINAL: CBM SC Where .....if you were to add additional string silencers to an Outback and take off the additional eliminator buttons on a Bowtech then the Bowtechs may jump ahead a few fps......I think !! I mean, we are talking about a completely insignificant difference in speed. This will mean nothing, at no time, anywhere!:D Specs are a nice thing to look at as a place to start, but when they're that close, you gotta go with something more sustantial then that, like the camo pattern or the look of their logo. You might even want to decide based on what feels best to you, knowing full well, that it's not going to feel best to everyone. ;):D Personally, I'd choose based on the higher brace height or the one with the best grip (in my opinion). I might even decide, with the criteria being straightest nock travel or lighest weight, but a couple fps in speed, wouldn't mean a thing. :):D |
RE: Mathews Outback
We have had an outback at the shop for a little while now -- I have pictures but not with me now.
I was pretty excited about this bow. I was never a fan of the small bows until I got my hands on a Merlin Hunters Quest 31 with Whisper cams. I set it up and shot it for a while and it shot great. I set it up for my father as a gift for a hunting bow. It was the quietest bow I have ever heard (I did have all the silencing stuff on it though), but still, it was like a recurve in noise level. I am now thinking of maybe getting a small bow for hunting (I currently shoot a 37" A-A Diamond Widowmaker with carbon riser -- (super light for you mountian hunters) I Liked the looks of the new Outback. I like the new Hardwoods HD camo and the riser looks nicer than previous Mathews risers -- looks a little more deep and open. I was hoping the grip would be a significant change, but other than the strip down the middle it is basically the same. I set it up with a NAP QT1000 rest and string loop yesterday for a customer to shoot and I shot it as well. I was expecting a bit more from it -- it was not as quiet as I expected and there was a definite buzz that I felt in my hand and could be heard after the shot. I was expecting a soft thump (like the Legacy). Not sure why this one is different that the ones others here have shot. The string suppressors on the one we got are hitting the string too early IMO and the string can be seen to angle from the idler to the supressor and there is a lot of stress onm the supressor, it will cut quickly. I may have to twist up the rigging to try and correct this, but man, it is right out the box like this. Of, we had it backed off about 4 or 5 turns (so people don't dry-fire it so easily). I think it is a nice hunting bow, but I now want to try some other offerings for comparison, like the Bowtech MM, the Hoyt small one, and the Merlin Max Xtreme. |
RE: Mathews Outback
LOL!! at some of you guys. How dare someone use the "M"-word here on BowtechBBS:D
|
RE: Mathews Outback
The best out of the small bows is between the MM, and Outback, I have tried Merlin, so i cannot account for those, but the Vipertec, is not a good small bow!
|
RE: Mathews Outback
we had it backed off about 4 or 5 turns |
RE: Mathews Outback
Don't rule out the Vipertec. It has a very smooth draw, low levels of noise and no recoil...though it was a bit lacking in the speed department.
|
RE: Mathews Outback
I mean, we are talking about a completely insignificant difference in speed. This will mean nothing, at no time, anywhere! Your right in that it is insignificant !! Your wrong , in that, it means nothing anytime ! A lot of these kind of debates are about bragging rights and 1 fps on a chrono is all you need to win !! Mine is faster than blah,blah,blah.......!!! ;) That is why I was trying to explain how easily you can manipulate the results .....too early this morning !!:D |
RE: Mathews Outback
Outback=4.3 lbs.
MMVFT=3.5 lbs. AND THE WINNER IS...........:D:D:D:D:D |
RE: Mathews Outback
you gotta go with something more sustantial then that, like the camo pattern or the look of their logo. |
RE: Mathews Outback
I just went and shot one at lunch..........it's definately sweet !! The new camo finish is awesome........best I've seen yet !!!
I will wait to see what the Classic is all about !! If it's not what I want........then I'll probably be tradin' in the LX for an Outback for sure !! If it' ll fit my SKB single bow case !! ;) |
RE: Mathews Outback
Interesting feedback on the Outback. The only real issue that seems people are hanging their hats on as to why they don't like the outback or that another bow is better is weight. If this is all you guys can come up with then I know I've made the right choice.:D:D:D:D:D:D

RE: Mathews Outback
And the "valley" is so small, that is another thing I have heard, who cares about weight, my LX does not bother me, I jumped to that from a PSE that was under 3.5lbs, did not bother me!
|
RE: Mathews Outback
Hey Pabowhunter,
You know we're not going to be happy until you compare your MM VFT to the Outback. You could just shorten the cable a little and go with a little longer string loop. :) |
RE: Mathews Outback
I looked at an Outback today. The finish was very nice. When I drew it back I noticed the near absense of a valley. I think it's more a case of very little break over into the valley. But if you relax and creep a small bit, it wants to get away from you. I didn't shoot it so I can't comment further.

RE: Mathews Outback
Hey Pabowhunter, You know we're not going to be happy until you compare your MM VFT to the Outback. You could just shorten the cable a little and go with a little longer string loop. As for the draw length issue...the MM VFT I am shooting now is a "30 inch" draw length though the actual draw is about 30.25...good for me since it still feels a bit short...;) |
RE: Mathews Outback
After owning a MQ-1 , a Ultra 2 , and an LX (and shooting tons of friend's bows)over the last 7 years ........I don't think the valley is that bad for a Mathews at all. My Ultra 2 would rip your arm off if you crept much......true be told !! ;)
I felt the draw on the Outback was comparable to the LX and when letting down it had plenty of room for creep on 80 % to me ! There are plenty of other bows that I would be more worried about creeping with/or letting down with........including some of the favorites around here !! :D |
RE: Mathews Outback
My LX is the same way, but it is very comfortable and smooth, iot does not bother me at all!
