ST Axis arrows and expandable broadheads??

How are the new Axis arrows going to hold up with expandable broadheads? I shoot Rocket Slammerheads and they cut into the ring behind the broadhead when they fly open. Is this going to damaged the shaft since there is no metal insert to protect the shaft as on a regular arrow.

You need to use Easton's broadhead adapter rings w/ mechs that do that or broadheads that use an O-ring like a Thunderhead.

They weigh 2-3 grains a piece.

CWB are you talking about the washer that comes with the broadheads or the metal "ring" of the arrow insert?

You are using the washer that is designed to prevent the problem you're typing about, aren't you?

They still cut through Range. At least they do to me.

It's just a safe bet. I had the problem on A/C/Cs as well w/ the Steelheads & NAP Scorpions. I always use them w/ mechs.

Rangeball,
Yes I use the ring that comes with the expandable broadheads. But alot of time the blades almost cut through the ring when the fly open and impact. I was thinking that this might cause problems with the Axis not having a metal insert to help protect the end of the shaft. I could probably just double up on my washers. I was curious if anyone had thought about this.

Wow, any idea what is causing that to happen? Doesn't seem right...

As far as doubling up on the washers, not sure if the slammerheads have the insufficient thread length problems that the steelheads are reported to have with some inserts.

I can foresee a big problem with those arrows and mechanicals.

You will need to double up on the washers (impossible with Rocket heads) or use the ubar or something.

its common after repeated practice to dent the insert - I would hate to see what it would do to carbon.

I was wondering about the same thing with these arrows in general, with any broadhead or field point. In Eastons diagram of the HIT technology, the broadhead doesn't seem to seat against the insert. So the only thing to keep it from being shoved back against the end of the carbon arrow are the threads. I imagine that's probably sufficient, but it seems that repeated impacts would tend to push the head back into the carbon, eventually causing problems.

My concerns also mirror those of CWB & Jeepnut. As for using washers between the shaft and the BH, one washer may not be enough, unless is't thick enough. My other worry is if the glued HIT gets undone (for whatever the reason) the broadhead is going to flare the front of the carbon shaft causing enough damage to the arrow.
The mechanical Steelheads I shoot always open back into the insert, leaving three very noticable grooves.
I'm wondering if Easton will come up with a broadhead that doesn't open all the way back--but then this may reduce the ability of penetration. I'm just thinking out loud here guys.
However, I think this is something that has to be address, for those of us who are using mechanicals.

All valid concerns. However the BAR will take care of the mech problem. I know..I've shot mechs out of them (and AFAIC, broadheads and arrows are disposeable when it comes to game).

While I certainly am not going to say that the ST AXIS may not exhibit some problems in the future, I've got several hundred shots on 6 different arrows and no problems yet..I don't forsee there being any problems. I've been abusing the hell out of them and inspecting them daily. These things are TOUGH.

Well I have one issue with them..the paint/graphics come off too easily :D

Well...make that two issues: I also need replacement nocks (busted several already) and they are not available.[:o]

As a further example of lack of insert problems, I had one stuck in my "black hole" target the other day w/a broadhead (broadhead sticking out the back 6 inches or so). Well for those in the NorthEast you will know it went from rainy and 45 to 15 degrees overnight and my target froze with all that water in it (and my arrow froze in it too). After 2 days of being frozen in the target, I yanked on that arrow for 10 minutes trying to work it out of the target (couldn't find my gripper). Well when it finally pulled through it felt like the insert came out and was stuck in the target...but lo- and behold, the Razorback was still there and solidly attached. Arrow spun perfect too.

I'm not trying to sound like a broken record and I don't work for Easton (boy I wish), but I am damn impressed with these arrows..and I'm sure most of you know I'm not impressed with much in the realm of carbon arrows. If these ST AXIS do indeed pass the "longevity" test ,this is by far the best Carbon arrow to hit the market in 10 years AFAIC.

:steps off soapbox:

:D
