Feather shooters
What length feathers do most use for hunting arrows? I have some aluminums set up with 5", just wondering if 5" is necessary on Easton Evolution's (340) .I have some fletched with 4" vanes but want to try the feathers on the carbons, while I'm asking, where is the best place you've found to buy Tru Flite's the closest shop only does vanes.
Thanks |
RE: Feather shooters
I use 4" for hunting and 3" for 3D.

RE: Feather shooters
I use 4" also on evolutions (340), but would use 5" on alum......later fishon

RE: Feather shooters
Whoops..
I also use 4" on 6075 t hunters with a 125 muzzy head. But am going to experiment with 5" feathers as well. |
RE: Feather shooters
I've used 3, 4 & 5" feathers, depending on the set-up. For Mechs the 3" ina helical work fine. For fixed blades 4 or 5" is the way to go.
BTW, good to see ya back Gromage..haven't seen a post of yours in a long time (or am I just oblivious?) :D |
RE: Feather shooters
No Jeff it's been a while, new house ,new daughter, not much spare time the last couple months, I did get time to get a 6pt and doe with the bow though.:) Thanks for the replies guy's.

RE: Feather shooters
Go with 4" feathers.
Good luck! |
RE: Feather shooters
three-inch offset feathers, and I'm shooting mechs.
|
RE: Feather shooters
I currently use 4" parabolic 3 fletch on my carbon arrows but I have used 5" shield cut in the past. In fact I am thinking about switching back to shield cut maybe 4" this time. I really like the look shield cut gives my arrows.

RE: Feather shooters
Jeff knows too much about arrows :) , This year I switched from 4 inch feathers to 5 inch feathers and the diferance is amazing . With fixed blade broadheads such as 3 blade 100 grain muzzys my arrows fly much better . I put mine on with a 4 degree right offset .

RE: Feather shooters
For a basic explanation:
The two primary purposes and affect of feathers and vanes upon a shaft are to, as efficiently and as quickly as possible, "stabilize" the shaft when shot and "control" in flight. As the arrow leaves the string, the feathers/vanes serve to straighten out the bending actions of the shaft (stabilize) and to guide and control the shaft in flight. The "control" aspect applies to the fact that a "fixed" blade broadhead will control and affect the flight and accuracy of the shaft if the feathers/vanes lose control. The size of the feathers/vanes become more critical with heavy setups (arrows) and as the speed of the shaft slows. Therefore, for "fixed" blade broadheads, especially shot off the high-energy and fast compounds that are out there today, I personally would not use anything less than a 5" feather/vane. |

ORIGINAL: ijimmy Jeff knows too much about arrows :) Gro, Yup...been there, done that as the saying goes :D Congrats on the new little one, the homestead, and the animals! |
RE: Feather shooters
Thanks for all the info, I got great results with the 4" vanes with the mechanicals this fall but never quite got the results I was looking for with the fixed blades, I blamed it on the inconsistancy in spine/weight with the carbons. I think I'll give the 5" feathers a try. Either that or break done and buy some ACC's. I know what your are saying about the newer bows. With my old Reflex all I do is tune and my fixed bh's are right there. Not so easy with the Mighty Mite but well worth the extra work. Then again maybe it's the bow, I haven't bought a new one in a couple of years.:D:D:D

RE: Feather shooters
4" helical feathers on Gold Tips
|
RE: Feather shooters
I use 5-1/2" mostly, but used 6" feathers last year.
Slight overkill perhaps, but I shoot my arrows from many different bows and the extra length keeps them flying true from all of them. They also keep the arrow stable when taking shots from awkward positions, and when shooting big one-piece broadheads that weigh in at 215 grains. |
RE: Feather shooters
I agree
