Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
Getting my wife a bow, 24in draw, cannot pull 40# so choices limited...thinking of the Genesis since it's easy to pull/use with potentially easy resale if she bails on the archery gig.
Suggestions... Any suggestions? |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
Check out the new bow by mathews called the sportsman I think. It has the same design as the genesis as far as the cam goes, but seems to be geared more towards hunting. I don't know what the minimum draw weight is. Most states have a minimum draw weight of 40 or 45 pounds any way. So you wife might be out of luck without doing some conditioning. I think she could work her way up to it if she tried. I am very little and I can pull around 65 lbs. 50 was a struggle when I started. The fact the she is a woman has nothing to do with it unless she believes she is inferior. It just takes practice that's all.
Good luck, Paul |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
No, no, no. Do not look at either of those Mathew's bows for your wife.
Genesis-kids bow, really designed for little kids, none of the good qualities that other Mathews bows have, junk compared to other Mathews. Sportsman-not designed for "general hunting" as you claim, designed for bowfishing and upland bird hunting w/a bow, it has no letoff. And like all of Mathew's bows (except Genesis), it has a minimum draw weight of 40lbs (adjustable down 10lbs) So, you get her the FX, no questions asked. It goes for $300-$400, comes in draw lengths of 23-31 inches, has draw weights of 40-70 lbs (adjustable down 10 lbs), has a large brace height at 7.5 inches, weighs only 3.3 lbs and, maxed out, will clock in at 308 fps. Plus, has much better resale value than the Genesis. IMNSHO, the absolute best bow for the money on the market. 40 lbs really isn't much. If you start her at 30lbs, it will only take time and practice until she can comfortably pull 40 lbs. My wife started out a couple of years ago at 35 lbs on a Mathews Feather Light. By shooting a lot, and doing some light exercises with 10lb dumbells we bought for her, she now pulls 52lbs on an FX. It took her less than a season to move up that far in draw weight. Just have to want to do it. |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
JWhite, I'm in the exact same boat as you. My wife cannot pull 40lbs either and has a 23" draw length. You might want to check out the Browning line. The Micro Eclipse is a solo cam bow with a 33" ATA, 2.5lbs mass weight, the cam is adjustable in draw length from 21" to 25", draw weights available are 15-25lbs, 25-35lbs, and 35-45lbs. The only thing she's/we are holding out on is whether to get the 25-35lb or 35-45lb draw weight model, i think she'll end up with the 25-35lb. The only thing she doesn't like about it is that it only comes in mossy oak breakup, she would rather have PURPLE! oh yeah it only runs $179.00 at the local "wally gander mart".

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
JWhite, I forgot to say - like Bo Hunter said do not go with the genesis, i already talked to my local mathews dealer about that one, he said "don't bother" it's meant for really little kids at outdoor camps just to introduce them to archery. I don't have anything against Mathews, I shoot one now and might be buying a new Legacy.

Don't want to step on any toes here but you may want to check out the BowTech Stalker Lite. It's new this year and it has the Rascal (kids bow) cam and idler on it and it comes in 23-29 in draw and 30-40-50-60" peak weights with 80% let off. IBO on it is 288-295 fps measured at 29" 60#'s I'm getting one for my girlfriend...For Valentines Day..Hey it's better than earings ain't it?

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
Even though I shoot a Mathews myself, for this scenario, I think I'd have to agree with Bowtech Shooter given the info I've read on that little Stalker Lite. A LOT more speed at the same low draw weights. And that's gonna make it more fun for your wife.

Check out a Parker Challenger!

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
My girlfriend can only pull 35 pounds so I bought her the FX w/ the mini cam. Its an awesome bow. It sells for 399 around here but its well worth the money. Go w/ the FX.

I started out with the Parker Challenger, excellent bow, I had about a 13lb. draw weight adjustment with it. My daughter shoots a Browning Micro Eclipse. Sweet bow, super adjustability. Can't go wrong with either!

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
My wife has a 23 inch draw as well. I found her a little older PSE Infinity SLR 500. She is shooting it very well at 35# and 1612 arrows. It is not slow (actually seems on par with most hunting bows with the set-up I have her shooting), has a very smooth draw cycle and fit her well.
The Parker Challenger is a good starter bow for women (can be had is nice colors too, especially if she is not interested in hunting). Martin is making a bow that many women are shooting -- I think it is a version of the panther and most of their top pro ladies are shooting that one -- is is very nice and is what I would get for my wife if she wants to upgrade in the future. |

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
It is only the gensis that has no let-off, and it has a maimum draw of twenty pounds, so even kids don't need let-off. The sportsman is not said by them to be a fishin etc... bow only, and it has 30% let-off from what I hear. 30% isn't bad, I had several bows that had that, but it would obviously be real tough if one was shooting a draw weight near one's max. I don't have anything against the recomendations made.
Before assuming 40# is light consider it in terms of total body weight, and lean muscle mass. Most people are overbowed. |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
Ossage: From the Mathews catalog: "The revolutionary Fin or Feather Cam..............Note: The Sportsman, because of the lack of let-off, is designed to be shot at lower draw weights."
Also from their catalog: Draw weight: 40-70 I don't think this would be a good choice for a woman or anyone else that desires a bow of <40#. |

Len
This isn't going to be another one of your comprehension posts, I hope... Mike Ziebel, Marketing Director of Mathews is quoted over on the bowsite videos saying basicaly this about the Sportsman: "The let-off on this bow is very minimal probably 30% rougly" See for yourself at: http://www.bowsite.com/BOWSITE/featu...icles/AMO2002/ I don't quite get you on weight. I don't have a catalogue, someone else mentioned it was a ten pound range 30-40#, which might be OK for someone who wanted a less than 40# bow... You have me on the Fin and Feather Cam if that is what they are calling it. But Ziebel also says that people were looking for something like the Genesis, "something they could actualy hunt with... really even youth or women who are looking for a bow they won't grow out of". Doesn't sound like just fish and feathers to me. |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
No, Ossage, comprehension is something that eludes some of us. I am stating facts here about what is advertised. I will therefore type the rest of their catalog information for you as follows:
"...As a bowfisher or upland bowhunter, you need to draw and shoot quickly and instinctively. The new Fin or Feather Cam from Mathews is a low (almost imperceptible) let-off cam that allows you to accurately release an arrow anywhere along the draw cycle - at full draw, half draw, 3/4 draw, etc. With minimal let-off, there is not the 'bump' commonly associated with high let-off bows as you approach full draw; and no real wall. You just draw back and fire! An added benefit of this system is that with minimal let-off, there is no specific draw length, meaning everyone can shoot the same bow. Note: The Sportsman, because of lack of let-off......." The emphasis appears to indicate, but I could be reading this wrong, that low, almost imperceptible, minimal, and lack of let-off does denote something approaching a recurve bow. If you or someone else says it's roughly 30%, so be it. The catalog shows "-". It's really not worth any argument. I've got a few antiques out on the range that fall into that 30% category, but they're 30 years old. I think that spending good money for a compound bow should get you a let-off that is something reasonable for the poundage. I stand by my personal feelings on this matter that, "I don't think this would be a good choice for a woman or anyone else that desires a bow of <40#.", and this is based solely on the let-off restriction. It's a personal feeling, Ossage, nothing more. |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
You know, when I made my above post, it's not like I hadn't read the catalog...
Another thing about the Genesis: the draw weight is only 10-20lbs, period. You can't hunt with it because of that, at least in a lot of places. |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
YOU DON'T WANT TO BUY A BOW TO SET IT UP--ON THE "LOW DRAW/PERFORMANCE END"--BOWS PERFORM BETTER TOWARDS THEIR MAX. SETTINGS--POUNDAGE WISE.JMO.

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
Actually, Bo Hunter, I think Ossage and I enjoy sparring. It tends to stir a little interest and gets things more lively at times.
Some day he may even stop by and see my shop. What say you, Ossage??? :) |
RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
I'd love to, Len.

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
mathews FX would be a great little bow for her if she wants to hunt.

RE: Mathews Genesis for wife??? Help.
jsasker,
Please elaborate on why you believe this -- other than you may have heard it somewhere. A good bow will perform very well throughout it recommended range, particularly if it has full capture, locking limb pockets. |
