RE: How to sharpen broadheads
A mill bastard file (sometimes followed up by stropping on a scrap piece of suede) is all I use. Rather than try to describe it, here' s a link that gives excellent instructions.

RE: How to sharpen broadheads
I prefer a whetstone to sharp mines.
Its not going fast, that true, but i am not in a hurry. I like them razor sharp and than a bit more...... |
RE: How to sharpen broadheads
I saw a post earlier regarding using sandpaper. Can you use the 600 and 200grit on a 2 bladed broadhead easily? I have heard that they sharpen the montecs well.

RE: How to sharpen broadheads
Sandpaper works, but you' ve got to make sure you' ve got it snugged down on a good, flat surface or it' ll round off the edge instead of making a flat ' V' edge. You' ll wind up with a ' U' instead.
I use a file to establish the edge, then a diamond hone to work off the burr and then a good stropping on leather impregnated with jeweler' s rouge and glued down on a block of wood to polish it off. It gets my broadheads so sharp you can' t even look at ' em without safety glasses. :) |
RE: How to sharpen broadheads
just curious, where can I get a piece of leather for stropping?

RE: How to sharpen broadheads
Do the critters you hunt come already skinned? ;)
Seriously though... If you don't have a leather supply house nearby, go to one of the local hobby shops. Sometimes they have scrap leather. If that doesn't pan out, hit a flea market or the Goodwill store and buy a pair of old beat up boots for little or nothing and cut 'em up. |
RE: How to sharpen broadheads
I use Magnus Stingers. I bought the Accusharp, which Magnus recommends, and I can say it works wonders. Works great on my knives too. I have them in the kitchen as well as my pack. Mike Sohm owner of Magnus posts frequently on bowsite.com, and he always recommends the Accusharp. Give it a try, they only cost about $8, and are mostly idiot proof, even I can put a shaving edge back on the blades after practicing.;)
First post on this forum, looks like it will be fun. JMAC |
