GPS Units
What would you all recommend for a good GPS unit? Anybody got one they are looking to unload?

I have recently found some new land to hunt on. I found some good spots with some good scrapes going on. The only problem is that I can find my way in but it is different all the time with a little wondering. I am tring to find a decent GPS unit so that I can track my way directly to the stand. More importantly getting out in the dark.

Thanks for your help & thoughts.

Garmin makes some good units. I have the Etrex Vista by Garmin. I love it. Easy to use interface. You can download all sorts of maps (topo, road, lakes) to it. It has never left me lost. It is a little pricy. About $300. I recomend them to anyone looking for a good GPS unit, but I am, not going to part with mine.[:-]

RE: GPS Units
My partners and I use Magellan 315' s. None of us are displeased in any way.

I have Waypoints marked then I have places to start from. I put my face into the wind and keep it there all day long. Then when I need to go back to camp, my GPS takes me there straight away.

Most GPS units will do the same. I am not into the fancy mapping systems, temperature reports and other junk available on more advanced Magellan' s or other makes. Mine is used strictly for wilderness navigation and the 315 more than meets my needs.

I picked up a garmin GPS 12 off ebay for under a $100 bucks for the same purpose. It has no bells and whistles but will mark spots, draw maps, and get you to your destination no problems. I take it with me hunting and fishing.

I have a Garmin Etrex doesn' t have all the bells and whistles the the Vista has but it is cheaper. I got mine off ebay for $70.00 and think they sell new for $119.00 you can usauly get one for around $100.00 on ebay. Walmart has been clearancing out the ones they have in my area because they are discontinuing them. Maybe you can check your local walmart and get a bargin.

I have an Etrex Legend by Garmin. Lots of bells and whistles, one step down from the Vista. Got mine for 150 after rebate from This thing is great for hunting. It has a trackback feature that will get you directly back to your spot the way you came in...

RE: GPS Units
I have an Etrex. If all you need it for is getting to and from you stand and marking waypoints then that' s all the GPS you really need. I use mine in conjunction with Topo USA 4.0 and I' m building a whole data base of my hunting areas and sign I find....good to go back a few years and see what what was happening then vs. now.

RE: GPS Units
I would recommend any of the Garmin products. Like the previous sender said WallMart and usually any other big dealer puts some incredible deals on them when they quit making that particular line. Garmin is good because they back their product line with a fix or will ship you a new unit. They are one of the best companies that I have dealt with.
