Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
The Specs:
Mathews FX 29" @70# 80% cam Beman ICS 340 @ 28" -- 100gr Thunderheads Tru nock metal loop Peep Nock for a kisser 7" X-ring Silicon stabilizer Wrist sling Tru-Glo Bright Site Caliper release GKF Mirage drop away What I' ve gone through: Well, all good things muct come to an end....my bow holding a tune has gone out the window! The past 2 weeks I' ve tuned and retuned and retuned and every time I shoot again it' s junk. I' d like to blame the new rest I put on, but I' m not so quick to judge as nothing is moving there at all. The sights aren' t moving, my form isn' t that of an olympic archer, but it' s not bad and it is very consistant. I' ve noticed that my cam is leaning at the top...to the left of the bow at the top and right on the bottom. My string & cable could probably be replaced, but I don' t think that would cause what' s happening. What' s happening: Every time I shoot I hit further to the left. It doesn' t get worse as I shoot for the night, but the next day it will be worse. I group tune back to were it shoots nice with bh' s and ft' s and re-sight in. Everything goes good for the night....then the next day it all starts over again. I' m possitve I' m not torquing, droping the bow, punching the release or peeking. What I' m doing: I called a local pro shop and am taking my bow up there tonight. I have a feeling the bushings are shot in the cam.....anyone have a problem like this ever? What happens when your bushings are shot? I haven' t put a new string or cable on, originals -- 3 years old. I haven' t had the bushings or cam or wheel looked at ever. This is what the string looks like coming off the cam x | x x | x x | x x | x x \ x |
RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
That oh-so-technical drawing is a bit of an exageration!:D Also, forgot to say that I shoot right handed.
Thanks! |
RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
If you are POSITIVE that you are not tourquing the bow etc., then personally I would bring it to a REPUTABLE dealership for a thorough inspection (limb to limb). I' m sure Mathews will replace anything that is wrong.

RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
That' s exactly what I' m doing tonight! I just can' t figure it out....and I never really paid much attention to the cam before -- I don' t know if it' s been leaning for awhile or if it is recent. My fault for not paying enough attention to detail. I need to have something done before the season starts in only 9 days....[:o]

RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
I' d also take it in. I shoot an FX also. I think 70lbs. is as high as you can go. I just had my string replaced and a different type of release, and had to go through re-tuning my setup. Hang in there, hopefully it isn' t anything serious.;)

RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
If it all began after installing your new rest, then the rest or adjustment of the rest is suspect. However, just to know that you are starting (tuning) from a good foundation, have your bushings, axles (bent), and axle holes (worn-enlarged. egg-shaped) in limb end checked. Also have bow checked for weakened or cracking limb(s).
Beware! Unless your bowshop is tech enough to actually gauge components the shop may simply jerk, bend, twist, and eyeball the components; and that is " shade tree" repair. |
RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
Well, I had it looked at last night. The cam lean was corrected by twisting the cable up a bit.
C903, very good points you make. The owner/pro at the shop is very skilled. He pretty much disassembled the whole bow and checked everything out. The bushing were okay as well as the axles, limbs were fine. The string and cable are three years old and need replaced, but aren' t in dire need of it. I' ll get through the season as is, and get a new string and cable later. I wish I would have paid attention to the cam before to see if it was gradually leaning over time....as is suspect. The rest is rock solid, but I admit that it was the first to get blamed. All is well now....so relieving! Another positive note about this shop.....the owner opened up because the other shops around are simply worthless -- underskilled and lax about everything, just wanting to make money. His prices are high for items, but the service is A+ and he 20 years experience tearing bows apart and shoots competetively. He' s a good guy tryng to make a living gathering quite a few new customers based on service an expertise alone....I' m now one of them!:D |
RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
Good bowshops having qualified and competent people, which includes the owner, are hard to find. Many talk the talk, but I have often found that too many cannot walk the walk.
If you were to learn how to troubleshoot and make your own repairs, you would find there is not really that much to it. Past a certain point, all shops send the bow to the manufacturer, anyway. |
RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
When you " retune" your rest to group your BH and FP, put a mark on the bar that goes through the bracket that attaches it to the bow. That way you will know if your rest is siding on you. I had this prob. with my mirage when I bought it. I would slowly slide to the left. I called GKF and they sent me a different bracket with a set screw to " grab" the bar. It has not moved since.

RE: Got a big problem, HELP!!!!
I just noticed that my upper wheel was leaning yesterday. I, too was gradually shooting to the left. When I first noticed it I thought the limb was ready to fail or something, but then I realized that the cable must have stretched or something so I made some twists to it and used a level to make it inline with the riser. It took a few tries, but now I got just the right amount of twist to get me back on the bull. With only one week till the PA opener, it was a stressful moment to say the least!!!! After this season I' m definitely replacing my 3 yr. old string and cable set!!
