archery for beginners
 

I read so much of the technical data posted on this page and realize I don' t have a clue what half of it means or how to do what is recommended.

I am a self taught archer who had no mentor/instructor to teach me the ropes when I got started. I went to Bass Pro with my Christmas money one January day and picked out a bow package, a dozen arrows and a few accessories. I took it all home put things where they were supposed to go (to the best of my knowledge) and started shooting.

The few times I have gone to the local pro shop they are to busy to teach me anything but they will sell you every thing you don' t need just to make a buck now, and another buck when you have to come back because you don' t know how to make what they sold you work for you. [>:]

Can anyone recommend a good book on " archery how to for beginners" ? The few publications I have read in the past do not give the very very basic information. I am really looking for technical information. How to tune your equipment, how to serve your accessories into place. How to get your equipment shooting to the best of it' s ability. Things of this nature.

You might find " Archery - Steps to Success" by Kathleen M. Haywood and Catherine F. Lewis. It gives some of the basic information and things like that.

OR...just ask the questions HERE!!! While you may not always get a cut and dried answer here (Don' t ask Art and myself if you should go heavy and slow or light and fast :D;)[8D] ) you WILL get opinions from some VERY good archers. You can learn BASICALLY which arrows to get (spine and fletching) how to fit your bow, the benefits of different releases, arrow rests, sights, broadheads (and even heavy and light arrows) and pretty much anything else you ever wanted data on. The BEST part is that you have a large pool of people giving you advice....you get to try a few different ways of thinking...not just the author of a books ideas.

I agree with Mahly, these forums are great for finding good info on different things and ppl are always willing to help, but you still might find a book reference like the one i mentioned above useful.
