I' m no expert on mechanicals but, what little I' ve done with them, I' ve found out it doesn' t take much crud around the pivot area of the blades to keep them from opening correctly, if at all. I' d bet if you got ice in there they wouldn' t open, no matter how much KE you had. The sliding design, like the Rocky Mountain Snyper might be better. I don' t know.

RE: FROZEN MECHANICAL

Good question. I think it could have a big effect. I only use mechs on antelope so it isn' t an issue. Last fall I spent a very wet and cold day in the deer stand and the jaws on my release froze. Had to put it in my mouth to get it to work again, ten minutes later would be froze up again. Once it was wet there was nothing I could do about it. Going by this I would say that a mech would not perform well under those conditions. I keep my release covered now when wet and cold but you can' t keep a broadhead in your pocket.

I did some testing with spitfires dunking them in water and then putting them in the freezer. They still opend. Yes I think in a freezing rain they could freeze up, but so would your rest, release, and everything else. It is something to pay attention two though.
