1 Pin to 30 yds results
Since there seem to be many threads on how many pins to use hunting I figured I would post what my " moderate speed bow does" .
This is the way I have been hunting for about 8 yrs now. I use this one pin set dead on at about 26 yds. I can without compensating keep my groups within a 6" circle from 5 to about 33 yds. I compensate a little high for 35 yds. I also have a second pin set at 40yds, and this is as far as I will shoot (hunting) This is from a 68 lb Bowtech patriot sc, 29" draw shooting 28.25" gold tip xt' s and 75 grn heads flying at 280 - 285 fps. The target has 4" circles so at 15 yds I am about 2.5" high and at 30 yds I am about 2" low. IMO this is a great way to set up for hunting with any bow shooting over 260 fps. Simple and effective, just takes a little practice to " know" what your bow does.:) ![]() |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
RA,
I started using one pin set at 30 yards about 2 years ago and I' ve found it to be be very effective. I' m about 3" high at 20 and 4" low at 40.....I know from 0-42 yards, I' m in the kill zone of an elk....Nice groups by the way ;) |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
I just purchased some new lighter arrows than what I was using before. Carbon Express 300' s, 29" , out of a 30" draw length Legacy set at 65 lbs.
I can tell this is a better set-up for a single pin out to 30 yrds. Still tinkering around with it but by deer season I should be ready. 122 days left till the opener. |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Nice informative post. 26 yards was the happy median eh?
I was shooting 268 until I installed my Whisker bisquit rest, then I dropped to 264 (even after trimming the front side). |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
I also shoot one pin, but it' s dead on the mark from 5 feet to 33 yards. Of course I have to be up in a tree to use it this way :)

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Is that straight down RB?
:D By the way....you and Dave should be receiving something shortly...sorry for the delay. |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
I shoot a 20 yrd pin at around 300 fps. My groups are about the same as RA , except my 15 is a little lower .

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
I' ve shot one pin for about 8 years. Only difference is my bow only shoots low 240' s. I sight in dead on at 20 and I' m good from about 5 yds to 25 yds. I rarely shoot over 25 (hunting)so that works for me. If the need comes up for a longer shot, it' s no big deal...I just adjust my hold a little. Since I' m not shooting a speed demon, practicing and knowing how my bow shoots is the key to shooting one pin successfully...even out to 40 yds. Good post Rack :)

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Thanks alot PAbowhunter, I just got word from the wife that I have a package waiting for me at the house. " Who is Frank .....?"
Ironic, I figured you forgot about me so I ordered a alpine slide glide and was gonna put it on after work and check the chrony to see if it gave me anything. Now I have two new toys to play with. My bows get pressed way too much:D |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
It works Rack Attack! Can' t beat that for hunting. I tell the new guys or guys buying or upgrading bows that this is a good pin set up. By the way, are you shooting in my back yard? That looks like one of my targets:D:D:D!

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
The perfect setup for Whitetail hunting, IMO.
I do two things differently, I started using an adjustable sight, so I can practice at any range I want. This way I still only have one pin when hunting, and for a knucklehead like me who get' s way too excited, I don' t have to worry about using another pin by mistake. I also like to set it up so it' s sighted in a little farther, I know I can always judge if the deer' s inside 20 yards, and just hold a few inches low. It' s everything over 20 I have a hard time guestimating. I' m always suprised folks who limit their shots to 35yds or so don' t use this system. |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Thanks for posting this Rack-attack. I just installed a single pin sight on my bow after using multiple pin sights for 15+ years. And I' m shooting very close to the same speed you are. 1 question. How' s that Morrell' s target holding up?
|
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
VA,
that Morrel target is one of the best I have had. it is not filld with fuzz like the bag targets. It is filled with a layerd material and holds up great. Arrows only go in a few inches and easy removal. |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Thats one reason I like this place, there is usually at least one other person out there that has the same thing on there mind as me. And that' s scary![:o]
I' ve been looking at new sights for the upcoming season. I will be going from a pendulum to a fixed pin because I seem to find myself on the ground wondering around more than up in the tree. And I usually see just as many deer. I have been looking at the new trio sight from impact archery, but have also considered using a single fixed pin. I may consider it further after I get out and do a little experimenting of my own. So, let me ask you guys, which sight are you using. Is it just a round aperature with a single pin made exclusivley for this purpose, or are you just moving all the rest of your pins down to the bottom, or taking them off completly. Also, if anyone cares to give thier opinion, what do you guys think of the impact archery sight? I' ve heard some good things about thier visibility, but haven' t heard much on durability. Man, I can' t wait till October!!!!! |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
micah,
I am now using the Spot-Hogg Right on. If you do a search in the Bowhunting forum you can read a report I did on it. It is a five pin sight. I use all five pins during the winter and summer because I often shoot out to 50 or 60 yds for practice. Around August or so I set it up with two pins and practice for hunting season. I like the option of having other pins available when I practice. I have also heard good things about the Impact sights but have never used one. |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Thanks Rack-attack, I use the Hogg-it Hunter for target shooting, but I like that the impact archery sights have 2.5 feet of fiber optics for each pin. Man, they are bright. I' ll probably end up with one of them for hunting, but would still like to know what you other guys are shooting. Or if anyone has had problems with them. Thanks
|
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
I' ve been shooting the Impact Cosmic for about 3 months now.....Took a turkey w/ it......VERY bright and (so far) very durable......Don' t know how good it would be as a " movable" sight since you have two points that you have to loosen to move it, but as a fixed pin, it works great......

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Micah, I am also a one pin shooter and have been fpr years. This year I switched to a Vital Bow Gear Profix model sight. Vital Bow Gear took over Scout Mountain . I really love this sight. It has the round pin guard with the orange around it to aid in centering the guard in a peep. It has vertical pin that is sooo bright. There is 3 ft of the fiber optic material wrapped around the guard. This sucker is really bright. It is really a nice sight. You can see it at www.vitalbowgear.com as i said it is the Profix model, you will find it under the vertical pin section.

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Proff, that' s a pretty good looking sight as well, do know what the diameter of the apereture is? I might have to see if I can find one of those to look at too.
|
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Micah, the diameter is 1-11/16, I just measured it. If you would happen to decide to go with this sight just send me a PM and I will tell you where to get it at a great price. A local shop close to me had it for $75.95, and I got it on line for $49.95. Quite a savings.

RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Frank, only if the shot calls for it :)
Actually, I switched to a pendulum last fall. Prior to that, I used 1 pin out to 30 yards... Thanks for the package. I sent you an email. :) |
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Rack, it works for a lot of people, but not for me. On my compound, I still set 10, 20, 30, and a 40 (just for practice). I use a 2001 Parker Feather Mag II. I just like to be dead on for the in close shots. I rarely shoot past 20 on a deer, but like to practice the long shots. For the recurve and longbow, no sights.
|
RE: 1 Pin to 30 yds results
Rack......I have the same results. One pin is really nice! I limit at 30 yards and have one pin at 20 yards. This really makes it simple and your sight window is great!
Good Luck! |
