Carbon arrows / New bow strings
I have been using aluminum arrows from the begining of my bowhunting experience. Now I am thinking of switching to carbon arrows. (Thinking this way) Even with a well placed shot about 80% of my aluminum arrows were being bent by either hitting a bone or going though and hitting a rock, or just getting bent as the animal would run off. Would it be cost effective to use a carbon arrow that would bounce back from any of these situations? I've hear name like Gold tip, Easton's carbon line-up, Beeman, Rino? I also have to replace my bow string for next year. My old boe just had the string conecting to the teardrops (not much to chose from) Now my Hoyt has the fast flight setup. I asked the dealer about Zebra twist? He said they were more noisy and not much more preformance than the stock string. What about the Winers Choice bow strings? I guess there are too many choices out there?

RE: Carbon arrows / New bow strings
I don't know if the carbons will be more cost effective or not.I am a fan of carbons and have had great sucess using them but also never had a problem with aluminums. If you go with a pure carbon shaft remembe they won't bend, but they will break that's whats nice about pure carbons they are either straight or broken.
The carbon composite shafts which are aluminum core and carbon wrapped will bend just as the standard aluminums.I use Easton ACC's (carbon composite) for 3D as well as hunting they are a great shaft but they are expensive. Seems like alot of guys like the Goldtips,I've never tried them so I have no opinion on them. Either way a carbon of some sort will gain you a little speed and I would say that they would last a little longer. As for strings I prefer strings made of 8125.There are alot of good string materials out there 450+,8125,DF97.The only one I don't like is S4. I have used the Zebra strings in the past on some of my Mathews,I have not found them to be noisy but I have found them to be inconsistent as far as length and also some seem to stretch alot more than others. Winners Choice are a fantastic string I have a couple on various bows, mine are made from 8125 and simply don't stretch, they have stayed the same though 1000's of shots. |
RE: Carbon arrows / New bow strings
MO,
Your dealer maybe right!!! Your new bows string maybe made of 450+ or similiar high tech materials and would be very similiar to the Winners Choice strings. Winners Choice makes a very high quality after market string and should be considered an alternative on your next replacement. As far as carbon arrows, yes they are tough. I have been shooting carbons for hunting now for 9 years. A carbon arrow is either good or its bad. They do bounce back so to speak when flexed where the aluminum bends. I think that the carbons are worth the money. As with all arrows its important to get the proper spined arrow. In my case I will select the next stiffest spine on the chart, because it is easy to weaken it up by using a heavier tip if need be. Most bows will shoot a heavier spined arrow very well, but there are usually problems trying to tune a marginally spined shaft with broadheads. Edited by - FLHunter on 01/01/2002 08:12:52 |
RE: Carbon arrows / New bow strings
Carbon is much tougher and I have used the same ones time after time.I havn't had 1 break yet on an animal and I had a bobcat trying to attack 1 as he ran around the field with it.The only reason it didn't pass thru was just because I couldn't get 27" of penetration in the ground.Who can?
As far as string materials,I like the 8125 with 20 strands much better than most.I used the 450 and liked it but it doesn't give and when it is time to go it may just break.I've seen this a lot.You will see much more of a speed decrease in the 450 than the 8125 and both will most likely be slower than the fast flight you currently have but are by far much better.I wouldn't think that the Zebra twist would be any louder and they are using different material now than they used too and the stretch that they used to have should be much better.I can't remember what the 2 types of string material they are using now but I think 8125 was 1 of them.Winners Choice does make an eccelent string but a little high for me.There are many that make good strings for much less.If your using it for hunting I really couldn't justify using them. There is another carbon that is the best for hunting IMO than any of the others and the spine is much easier to get right. They spine from 60-100 pounds. That preety well covers it and they also make a light spine shaft also.Nitro Stingers are awesome penetraters.Give them a look. www.nitro-stinger.com |

RE: Carbon arrows / New bow strings
I think it would be a great Idea to switch to carbon, FL and TFOX opened my eye's on this forum to the benifits, I used carbon many times to compete but never thought about hunting with them. Well I am going to get a new compound next year and shoot the carbon I have already purchased through it for hunting. I have tryed the Terminator hunters through my recurve and they penetrated far deeper, though I could not get them sighted in for some reason. Ahhh well, we will see with a compound. Good shooting and Newyears.

RE: Carbon arrows / New bow strings
mo, I started to use carbons this year, I was using 2315 30inch and with my bow 1983 jennings forked lighting 70# it shot aluminum at 198fps. while I was at the local pro shop they gave me a gold tip to shoot and it shot 225, I was going to get them but instead I got PSE`S carbon force 300 29inch and these shoot 229fps, I haven`t shoot a deer with them but i might get 1 tonight after work, I will not go back to alum because they shoot so much faster and flater and my groups are so much closer
