How fast am i shooting?

hi guys... i purchased a new bowtech SWATa week ago, and i'm trying to figure out the speed roughly without a chronograph. heres the specs: i'm shooting at 70 lbs. my draw length is 31 in.and the total weight for the arrow in grains is 460. the ibo specs for the bow are 314-322 fps. i'm just wondering what kind of speed i'm shooting roughly.

i'd say between 280 and 285, but I'd say your arrows are a little underspined with the 125 grain heads.

I added 10 grains of weight on your string along with the Data you submitted and came up with 292 FPS

underspined? care to explain? i thought the guy at the bowshop set me up right with the 7595's.....

I agree that your spine is going to be weak. That is the problem with Goldtips. They are rated up to 95#'s but no way in hell will that happen at long draw lengths such as yours. The 7595 is only a 340 spine and you clearly need a 300.

I am getting you right at 280 fps.

1 question. How long are your arrows? Even with the 125s, you almost have to be leaving them full length to get 460.

Not if they are camo, which that was what I assumed,so I could get that weight when I ran the numbers.

the arrows are cut right to 32 inches. what do you guys suggest i do to get the spine where it needs to be? i just bought a dozen arrows thinking thats what i needed.

RE: How fast am i shooting?

Most of us are shooting arrows shorter than our draw length buy about an 1".

You are well underspined.IMO,you will need to be shooting a 30" arrow that is a 300 spine to be close to correct at that poundage.

bowhuntn87 03-08-2009 05:16 PM

RE: How fast am i shooting?

so is there anything i can do with the current arrows i have? turn down the poundage ect ect.?

RE: How fast am i shooting?

125gr. tips. You will lose FOC then though. you could cut your shafts as short as you could get them, drop a few #'s of DW, and use 100gr. tips and then you probably have better results.

With 10gr. on the string i got you shooting 288. With 15 it is at 286.

You are plenty fast for any type of shooting/hunting imo.

RE: How fast am i shooting?

IMO,to be properly spined to get broadheads and fieldpoints to hit the same poi,you will need to go to 30 1/2" arrow at 60#'s.

I wish Goldtip would drop the crazy poundage ratings on their arrows and use the proper and actuall spine so that people, including so called proshops will know if an arrow will actually work.

RE: How fast am i shooting?

something I always wondered.. Did GT "invent" their spine rating system back when bows stored much less energy?

RE: How fast am i shooting?

this kinda confuses and frustrates the heck out of me. does this mean i can't use gold tip arrows since i am using 7595's which are the heaviest hunting arrows that they carry?

TFOX 03-08-2009 07:35 PM

RE: How fast am i shooting?

They do have heavier spined arrows, but I have yet to see them stocked in any proshop. You will have to have your shop special order them(heavy big game 100 arrows or their caa arrows) for you or go with another brand of arrow that has a .300 spined arrow.

I believe you will still need them cut shorter than your current 32" even with a 300 spine.

I'd agree with all of this.

Goldtips labeling system was great 10-12 years ago when they hit the market. Today it's a recipe for disaster. You need a .320 to .300 class spine- Easton 300 carbons, A/C/C/ 3-71, Carbon Tech 300/65-80s, CX400s, etc.

I shoot arrows that are 27" long at a 28" draw and have plenty to spare. Cutting your arrows down to spine correctly at your stats should be No problem, but very necessary.;)

I'd say once all is said and done you'll easily be in the 290's. Binary cams unlike others are fairly forgiving of a softer spine, but get those arrows cut down as much as you safely can to stiffen them up.

RE: How fast am i shooting?

thanks for the help guys. so say i wanted to build an arrow to with a 300 spine. i want to spend roughly the same amount of money i did on the xt's. (roughly 75 bucks a dozen bare shafts). any recomondations on what i should get? i also want a fairly high f.o.c. (between 10-13%). how should i build them?

bump... anyone?

RE: How fast am i shooting?

Easton Epic ST 300s- good FOC due to the heavy HP insert, same exact tolerances/basic construction as the AXIS but $25 cheaper a dozen. Slightly larger diameter.

Beman ICS Hunter 300 is also in that price range, and will have good FOC due to the heavier insert as well.

dandbuck 03-12-2009 05:58 AM

RE: How fast am i shooting?

Honestly, i would go to AT and look for some arrows that would work. I've switched to Axis and bought all of mine there, never paid more than $5/arrow. Most had wraps and blazers for that price. You may have to cut them, although with your length it will be harder to find long enough. Go there, do a search, see what happens. you could even post a "looking for......." thread and maybe get lucky.
Good Luck

RE: How fast am i shooting?

well it looks like i'll probably be going with the beman ics hunters. i plan to get them in the 300 spine, and get them cut to 31 inches. i plan on adding a 125 grain tip, and shooting them with blazers. the total weight of the finished arrowwill be right around 465 grains. i have a 70 lb draw and a31 indraw length. does this sound like a good set up? correct spine ect. ect.?

JeffB 03-12-2009 05:05 PM

RE: How fast am i shooting?

ICSH are always a "good value" choice in arrows and they will kill deer like nobodies business-

You may be a tad underspined with 125 grain tips- try it, and if necc, go to 100s or add some heavier vanes to the back (My recco is Flex Fletch 4 or 5")

TFOX 03-12-2009 06:01 PM

RE: How fast am i shooting?

Why are you cutting them to 31"? That should put you a couple inches out in front of your rest. 1" is all that is needed.

RE: How fast am i shooting?

i think u shld be shooting around 290
