Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
I've been shooting the Whammy for about a month now and think I have a pretty good tune on my bow. So much so I just shot a 588 on a 600 round last night with it on a hunting setup. :D (Purdy good for me).
I thought I'd pass along some of things I've learned about this rest since setting it up and playing with it. 1. Do not be intimidated by this rest! It sounds complicated, andIMO, Spot Hoggs instructions make it sound way more complicated than it really is. 2. Tie in location on the up cable is easier to locate than the instructions make it out to be. Just draw the bow from a ceiling hook and mark a location about 1 1/2" below where the cables cross. Serve from that point up and stick the pull cord through it. 3. Mount the rest on the bow so that the mounting bar is square and tighten it down. MAKE SURE YOU TIGHTEN IT DOWN REALLY WELL WITH BOTH THE MOUNTING BOLT AND THE LOCKING BOLT. I evidentally didn't and my rest started moving after a few shots. Because the cord is yanking the down on the rest so hard, care must be taken to ensure the rest doesn't move. 4. On Bowtechs, because the berger holes are lower than most, you can get the arrow lower by lowering the prongs all the way and removing the fork tamers that come with it. Put some thin fleece on the prongs and you should be able to cut half the berger hole. You still won't get it low enough to pass through the center of the hole, but it will definitely get you in the area. 5.As for timing the rest. Insert a tiny allen wrench in the hole on the actuater arm, pull down the actuater arm, insert the pull cord through on of the holes (depending on your bow). Now, just pull the cord tight enough to where you are JUST BARELY putting pressure on the bow's cable. Tighten it up, remove the allen wrench from the actuater arm, and draw the bow a couple times to make sure that at full draw, the cord goes slack and the actuater arm is in the full up position. Some things I've noticed. If you use moleskin on the prongs, you'll burn right through it in short order. I have never had this issue with other drop aways. This tells me the rest is doing exactly as it's supposed to...guiding that arrow for much longer than standard drop aways that fall too fast. To get your arrow lower, you can also mess with the prongs. Turning them out more can help get a lower arrow. This rest is a real tack driver. So far, I'm thoroughly impressed with it. And of course, being from Spot Hogg, I doubt you'll break it. :D |

This thread has reminded me of another thread I wanted to post...thx:)

RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
You're pretty much dead on there muzzy ;). It is indeed a simple rest once you spend the time to sort it out [8D].
As for silencing the launcher arms, I've tried almost everything I can think off, some burn thru faster than others. However I've found that the Gibbs (GAG) Super Slick prong rest silencers work for quite a long time (and I shoot my bows on a daily basis). They really work very well indeed! The down side to using them however is, itwill raise your arrow a little 'higher' from the shelf, thus taking it closer to the top of the berger hole. Nevertheless I have not found this to be a problem. The main reason for keeping the arrow closer to the shelf is to reduce the amount of left & right gaps from the target, (torque). Once you can control your torque, getting in the center of the berger is not absolutely necessary. |

i had the whammy on my marquis but didnt like it i now have the limbdriver very nice rest but am waiting on the trip wire it looks like it will fit bowtech and diamonds well but i agree the whammy was easy to set up i just didnt like the issues i had with tuning
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
ozbowhunter...not rushing to defend the Whammy, but I'm curious as to what tuning issues you had with it. Can you elaborate?
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
muzzy when i lowered the the arms to get the arrow lower i wasnt happy with the clearance on the shelf and when i raised them it was to close to the cable guard then there was the issue ith it hitting the riser shelf just to many little things that i agree can be sorted but just wasnt how i wanted it to be
i had a g5 expert which is a great rest with no shelf contact but it put to much tension on the buss cable so far the limbdriver fits most of what i am looking for in a rest but the tripwire looks like it deals with all these issues we will see |
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
It took me all of about 10 minutes to setup my whammy and 5 of it was serving the cord in.
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
tfox was that on a hoyt?? or a bowtech?? it didnt take long to set it up at all i just didnt like the small issues i was having with trying to get it tuned well on the bow for clearance etc its a great rest just didnt suit me

RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Mine was on a Hoyt but I would do the exact same things I did for a BT,which are the same suggestions I gave Muzzy that seem to be working for him.He did change the distance he tied in his cord but from what I have read, that is the only change.
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
TFOX, you're correct. With my Allegiance, I had no choice but to tie it in a little lower than I was expecting. The cable cross would have jammed up the cord at full draw. Not a big deal at all.
I'm going to shoot the heck out of this setup for a while. My one and only concern with this rest is the bounce back you get when letting down, which I'm leary of for hunting. |
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Not an issue if you are letting down correctly. As we discussed before.
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Muzzy, if you let the string pull your hand down after let off the arrow 'will' bounce off the launcher arms. You need to keep holding the string and almost creep it down to brace.
I alsoposition my'index finger' below the arrow so 'if' it comes off during let down it would not hit the riser and make any noise, also I can move it back in between the launchers arms as well with my index finger. Another solution is to stick some moleskin on the shelf and side of the riser, this will dampen the sound in the arrow does come off the rest. |
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
I"m going to work on this and see what solution works best for me. I do let down very easy and get minimal bounce, but I can see in a pressured hunting situation that i'm not going to be thinking about all of that, especially with mr. big in front of me.

With mr big in front of you ,I can just about promise you will be letting down so slow that you won't even be able to tell the rest moved. Been there, don't that. |
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Alright, so last night I was at the shop shooting and all of a sudden I started to shoot low. I looked everything over and nothing jumped out at me. I spent the next 20 minutes checking tune and then the problem surfaced. One of the prongs rattled look and was letting the arrow fall. [:@] I tightened it back and all was well. Then I noticed some abnormal shots, more than usual for me. I'm getting fletch contact and I'm not quite sure what the remedy will be. I reset the timing on the rest again and still am getting some contact.
I'll work on it and get the clearance thing fixed. One note to anyone shooting or thinking of shooting this rest. Make sure EVERYTHING IS VERY TIGHT. Because these "driven" style rest put some much force on the rest itself, you have to make sure everything is super tight or else you run the risk of it coming loose. So far, this is the third adjustment that has come loose on me. |

RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Muzzy, you also need to check that the launcher arms are not hitting the shelf. Remember to give it about 1/16" clearance between the arms and the shelf, as the launchers will drop even lower during the shot cycle.
Another thing I did was to install an extra screw in the opposite side of thelauncher axle, this way the arms are'each' secured with two screws instead of the one that Whammy ships them with. |
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
ampa,
Yep, I have that clearence. I am going to tighten thecord some to get it to fall a tad quicker and see what I have from there. |
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
I think the Whammy is a good rest, but my number one choice is still the Limb Driver.

RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Dan, I'm really, really thinking hard about trying the LD. EVERYONE seems to love the thing. I may check in with my shop to see if I can do a swap. My thing with the Whammy now is...there is a lot going on with that rest. I've always picked hunting equipment by simplicity because I go with Murphy's law when in the woods....what can go wrong, usually does. :D I still like it, but...ah hell I don't know. :(
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
i have the limb driver now took about 5 mins to setup and it shoots great no issues best rest out there imo
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
I have not had to tighten a single screw in either of my whammies on either bow since setting them up.
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
I don't even get contact with this 4 fletch arrow.I made this up specifically to check for contact issues.
![]() It groups pretty well with my feathers at 23 yards. ![]() |

RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
just wait untill the octane tipwire hits the market lets see if it throws some more rest competition in the barrell
|
RE: Spot Hogg Whammy Update....tips.
Muzzy, could the issues you seem to have had with the Whammy be solved by them making a longer bar? Wish they would.
