Placement of vanes or feathers on the shaft.

I have bought arrows from several different shops and I started to fletch my own arrows with an Arizona fletcher. What I have noticed is that depending were I go or if I fletch my own arrows, that the vane or feather placement is different. When I use my Arizna fletcher the vanes are usually down the shaft about a quarter of an inch. My question is how does this effect my arrows.

I have always heard that they do better the closer they are to the end of the shaft. It is supposed to stabalize them better. On my regular shafts I put them about 3/16" from the end. On my super selects, I put them right on the edge of the taper.

I set mine as close to the nock as I can for some reason:D

I just saw on the True Flight web site that they recommend 1" to 1.5" from the nock. I adjust mine according to the profile of the feathers because of my anchor point. JERRY

I have to use the same placement each time, also using the same vane size and rear profile.

One of my anchor points is the vane, jabbing under my lip. I' ll be just a tad off with other vanes.

I use the vane to touch my lip as well. Along with the cheekbone and the string on the nose, it makes for a consistent anchor point.

The vanes are maybe 3/4" from the end or slightly less.

I just searched the old memory banks and I remember that if you are a finger shooter you need clearance for the fingers. Other than that I don' t think there is any reason to have them further from the nock than necessary.
