I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I know this is more of a 3D question, but there are a lot of 3D shooters here and it gets more traffic.....and besides I've been good.:)
So TECHNICALLY......How do you guys get these stinkin' high speed carbon SOB's out of a cold 3D target!!! I want to get serious about 3D shooting this year and don't want to be the NitWit taking 45 minutes to pull an arrow..... I've tried every stupid silicon lube, Slick 50 style junk in a "Slick Tube" and that seemed to work about as well as Super Glue. I'd really like to be able to finish a course without my hands curled into a lobster claw......I have a "Gorilla Grip" but does anyone else seem to think that your hands work better? Having to use 2 people to pull every arrow gets old in a hurry. I've heard that Ivory Soap is a good choice.....1. How do you carry a bar of soap to use this way on a 3D course?? 2. Does it effect arrow flight? If soap is the "Cure All".....is it possible that a LIQUID Ivory soap in a "SLick Tube" would work just as well, or is it something with the bar style? Does anyone know of something better that they are keeping a secret?......if not I guess at the very least I can shower up with my bar of soap at the next "Cross Stream" shot! |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I use Armorall in my dip tube and seems to work pretty well,a slight twist before you pull will usually get them started but be careful, carbon can break if you twist too hard. Some will say not to use Armorall because it isn't suppose to mix well with carbon but if it isn't submerged in the stuff it should be ok.I've been using it for 3-4 years now with no problems.
That is one reason I like the Rinehart targets over the Mckenzies, they pull easy, even in cold weather. There is one grip that sells at the big shoots that works great. It has little bumps all over it and if you can't get an arrow out with it,it can't be removed.I can't recall the name right now but I am sure someone here knows what it is called. |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I carry a bar of Ivory in a fanny pack on the 3D range works like a champ. Rub a little on the shaft by the tip right before the shot, doesn't seem to affect flight at all. Works way better than any lubricant I've tried, a 2 finger pull every time.
I've heard the liquid Ivory also works good in a tube, but I tried someone else's and it didn't. I don't know what formulation he used though, it may take some experimentation to get the same results. |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Carbonexpress By gametracker use a coating over the carbon called buff tuff, they are applying it to alot of there new models these days, It makes pulling carbon out of a target far easier.
Good luck on finding what you need. Dylan >>>>--------o--> |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Ivory soap gets my vote. A few ideals on carrying it: put it in an empty roll-up deodrant container, when you've used all you string wax - carve the soap to fit that container or just carry a little chunk with you.
You just need to put it on the end of the arrow maybe 2-inches. I think the soap is a lot lighter (on the arrow) than all the lubes in the tubes. |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Matt shooting 336fps will have that impact LOL Can't answer for you but I am guessing you were using pro38.

Woody's Arrow Lube. Best stuff I've ever used, allows you to pull out any carbon out of any foam target with basically one hand. Just gotta remember to lube up before every one-two shots. www.capital.net/~woodys Great stuff! Good shooting, Pinwheel 12

Pig Points. Got them from Cabelas. They are a field point that is just slightly oversized in the middle, then taper back to the shaft. It makes the hole in the target just slightly larger than the shaft size, so the arrow pulls out much easier. Four of us shot with them all last summer after we all switched to carbon arrows. You wont believe the differemce they make.

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I think your arrows are melting in flight! w with your monkey arms, and new high speed bow you should swithch to rebar, it should slow your speed down enough to make pulling it out of the targets fairly easy, provided it doesn't knock the tarket over!! Not sure about what kind of glue to use to make fletchings stick to the reabar though? LOL

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Got to vote for Woody's too. I apply every forth shot. Ivory soap works well too but more of a pain to carry and apply than the Woody's.
The arrow puller in question is made by AEP. Works well. Mine is over four years old. Most of the little bumps are gone though. The Buff Tough on my friends CXLs didn't help any this past weekend. He shot one with no lube on it by mistake and it tooke three of us to get the darn thing out of the target. I wasn't impressed. |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Woody's arrow lube and a good arrow puller currently I use a Third Hand Archery pro puller. Get ahold of me after the AMO Show and I'll introduce you to another good arrow puller. What carbons are you shooting?

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I use a dip tube with silicone in it and it has worked pretty good for me. Try putting Pledge on the end 6" of each arrow before you start. Helps for the first few. I usually carry a small hotel size bar of soap in my pouch if I need it and just rub it on the last couple inches. DON'T twist a carbon shaft, especially in cold foam or you'll have pieces.

I don't have the patience for the melting stuff. I just crammed a bar in a deodorant dispenser. The dispenser shaves off what doesn't fit then cut off the excess lengthwise. Throw the cap on and chuck it in your quiver.

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I do things a little different from most, as usual.
I take my arrows about once a month and wax the front half with a silicone paste car wax. Rub it in real good, let it haze up, and then wipe them down. Then I spray silicone lube (I like Blakemores' Reel Magic because it comes in a small can and fits real nice in my quiver) on the waxed part before going out to shoot and let it dry. After about 4-5 targets the arrow will start sticking again, and I just switch arrows. About the halfway through the shoot, I spray them down again. It does two things. It makes the arrows easier to pull, of course, but it also cuts down on the amount of abrasion the carbons put on my prong covers and makes them last longer. Gotta have a gorilla grip puller too. |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Thanks guys you're awesome!
I will be ordering some Woody's, and "Pig" points.....they sound interesting. ANd I'll have a back-up Ivory soap bar hanging from quiver. I'll be the envy of tired shooters everywhere!! I was beginning to think I was going to have to rent the "Jaws of Life" to pull these things. I've always shot pretty speedy bows, and carbons for the last 5 years, so pulling arrows has been a challenge for a while......I'm just stubborn I guess. I started shooting a lot more "Real" 3D shoots last year and not just the backyard target for hunting practice.........Man are some of those new targets stiff!! Especially early in th eyear. It took a few years but it finally sunk in......get some flippin' help! 5-Shot , man you're right......before the good info here I was almost hoping for pass thrus for 3D shooting. Make it a bit tough to score.......:) This new bow is so fast it's practically sucking babies from their mothers arms as the arrow goes by......and they're indoors! BowTech SHooter.....I'm shooting Carbon Impact "Fat Shaft" 6500's. I'm going to cut up a new dozen and try to build a 325-330gr set-up to match the 65# weight if I'm gonna shoot that. By the way......I might even go down a bit more in draw weight, but I'm off 2 1/2 turns already. How much more can I go on these bolts? I'd actually prefer to shoot about 62# for 3D so is another half turn too much?. The first full turn didn't do much to drop the weight. Once again guys you've come thru with valuable information and I thank you all......You've saved me carpal tunnel surgery I'm sure. |

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Thanks Steve.....I figured that one out pretty quick.:) Just got a picture of some monkey.
I had to go to Google.com to search for the correct one......I was going to post it but you beat me to it. (you probably have it on your site somewhere.....what DON'T you have on that site! It's the best) |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Matt/Steve-
Sorry for the foul-up, but that is the address that came off of Gary's (Woody's) business card. Used to work! Good shooting, Pinwheel 12 |
RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Matt/Pa, They recommend no more than 3 turns out. Try it and see what poundage you come up with. Well guys I'm packing for Nashville and gotta leave early in the Morn. Talk to ya after the show..

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
Matt, if you try the Pig Points, let me know what you think. A group of 4 or 5 of us shoot,(informally on our own 3-D type range), during the summer. The first time we tried to pull a carbon launched from a Q2, I started laughing and picking on the guy trying to pull it for being a weakling! Then I tried, and even with my butt against the McKenzie and both hands on the arrow, I could hardly budge it, I quit laughing! The Pig Points made a world of difference for us, I wouldnt shoot carbons again without them. Good luck.

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I FOUND THE BEST THING IS USING THE GOLD TIP 3D POINTS THEY WORK THE BEST THEY ARE LARGER AT THE FRONT END AN PUNCH A NICE HOLE FOR THE ARROW.

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
I found the easiest way for me to get the arrows out of a target is to get my son to pull them. But I also carry my Ivory soap in a small release pouch (in case my son needs it).

RE: I Can't get the arrows out of the target!!! :-(
matt, maybe i overlooked it, but be very careful removing any carbon from a 3-d target. if you elect to twist your arrow to break it free, you will most likely damage the arrow, if not break it. the only carbon i know of that can be twisted is a easton acc, or hyperspeed. i pulled a redline in half over the weekend, so i wouldnt reccomend the twist method. the ivory soap is the best thing going, along with the 3rd hand puller. make sure you get the new puller, the one with the squared off groove in it. just close it around the shaft, and pull. make sure no one is behind you while pulling, the arrow can come out very quickly after if breaks free. good luck.
