New String
Can someone tell me the name of a good string that I won't have to worry about breaking in or "stretching." Also, the sticker on my Reflex indicated the number 59 for string. Does this indicate inches? Thanks.

Vapor Trail.
1-800-310-8110 tell them your bow model, and they will compare the numbers off of your bow and what they have to make sure its right. Their turn around time is EXCELLENT!!! Derek |
RE: New String
My favorite is winners choice, but it will stretch the first 50 shots. Just the way it is even though it is prestretched. I like vapor trail, but it too has needed the 50 shot break in.

RE: New String
It doesn't matter which brand of strings you buy. They all need a break-in period. The better ones, like Winner's Choice, Vaportrail, Bucknasty and others need as little as 10 shots while other may need 100 shots. During this time they all creep (stretch) till the strands are all doing equal work. This also varies, with the better ones creeping 1/8" till they settle, while overrated strings like Zebras have been known to creep an inch or more over their useable time.
I've only ever tried three aftermarket strings. Winner's Choice, Prostrings, and Bucknasty, priced in that order high to low. IMO Bucknasty was just as good but at nearly half the price of Winner's Choice. In fact, the workmanship of his servings was even better. There ae literally dozens of good string makers today. I search either here or the classifieds on www.archerytalk.com would show some of them. Some are small operations so can't afford to advertise, but make a good string at a very affordable price. They just need someone to give them a chance. The one thing you will notice very readily is that any of them make better strings than what came on your bow from the factory. This also applies to the majority of factory strings. |

get a hold of these guys they make their own string s and they are great no worries about stretch and they are tuff! i have new strings/cables on both of my bows and both have gotten faster with these new strings. and their prices are pretty reasonable and the guys are very easy to work with. |
RE: New String
There are a lot of good string companies out there. I for one have used Winners Choice and Wolf Den. I will always buy Wolf Den now. Just as good of quality and half the price. Most of them need a break in period. But like said, most of the better strings settle in after 20-50 shots.
Give the guys at Wolf Den a call. They're top notch. |

And I might also point out that the price of Winner's Choice can vary somewhat depending on just where you order them. Direct is surely the best way, but there are a lot of shops handling them now and charging $100 or more sometimes. Good or bad I won't argue about. WC's are good strings. though. All I'm saying is that here are less expensive alternatives. Let's just put it this way. Using your own prices would you concede that $60 is 2/3 of $90? Can we at least agree on that? |

All I am saying, is a bunch of people are throwing out some BS stats. I shoot em all, and can't say I have killed anymore deer with any of em, so I don't have dog in this fight. All I ask for is for strings to shoot for me and stay consistent, and at least 75% of them do that (not zebra twist either). |
RE: New String
I just put my Vapor Trail VTX on my bow yesterday. Shot it about 50-70 times yesterday and the peep twisted the first 3 shots but then it hasn't twisted since. Even today I took it out again and it was perfect for another 50 shots or so. Even though it has been going from 70 degrees in my house to 18 outside multiple times. I love it so far.

Will a shoip put them on for you? Most certainly---for a cost. It won't be free, but a good shop will not only put them on but set the bow up for factory specs as well. They should also know to set the bow up about 1/8" to 1/4" short on the draw length because even good strings creep a bit when new so this should be taken into consideration. On average your new strings should settle down after about 50 shots. I've personally had some that settled into the cam in as little as a half dozen shots and some that took 100. One of the best things to do when you put strings on your bow is to go ahead and take those 50 or so shots on a practice range before you install your peep (if you use one). Put the peep in afterwards. |
RE: New String
I put Vapor Trail strings on my BowTech Airborne 82nd in the summer, set cam rotation, cam timing, walk back tuned it, and sighted it in. Since then I have shot it continually. Logged over 300 hours in a Blind/Treestand in temps from 80 degrees to 24 below zero. I've hunted the dry plains of Nebraska in Oct., set in pouring rain in IL, and dealt with snow in 2 different states.
The peep is still aligned perfect, and Cam timing, & tune have not moved one bit. I'm not sure what else you could ask of quality strings.;) Dan |
RE: New String
After all the replies, obviously (after market) strings/cables are pretty popular. But do bow shops have a cheap generic string that they usually put on? EXAMPLE: If i walk into a bow shop and ask them to put on a new string, do they have a stock string that's a lot cheaper? Or do they stock a certain brand of the after market strings?

Tailor Maid has a better string and it costs more, but I have no experience with them. Most shops will also handle Zebras, too, but these are not a whole lot better except that they empty the wallet almost as much as a decent aftermarket set. Figure something like $32 to $35 for a string. I don't know about the cables as I don't think they are worth bothering with. My best suggestion is to get a decent aftermarket set and pay to have them put on and set up. Although the initial oulay may be more you'l find that once they are broken in and the tuned it usually stays in tune till the strings are ready to be replaced. That is the major advantage I see to them. |

Excellent! Thanks a lot everybody.

RE: New String
Some of the cheaper string makers I can think of are: Vaport Trail and Bucknasty. H&M bowstrings are said to run about the lowest for a quality string -- but I have no clue about them -- never shot them. Go on AT and do a search for custom strings. You will find about every string maker out there and you can call and do a price comparison.

RE: New String
How does one find Bucknasty strings? Do they have a website or phone number?

RE: New String
WC, Vapor Trail, Dakota...all are pretty good strings. In the end you get 'what you pay for'...mostimes!
If however you're looking to change strings on a Bowtech, I would recommend going back to the Bowtech factory strings, they're just as good as any good string out there. BUT---of recent I've noticed the serving on some Bowtech bows are separating, I HOPE the guys at Bowtech are aware of this. BTW, there's a guy that engineered the 'Little Jon Bowstring Jig', Philip McMahan, met him a year ago at the ATA Show. His main business is selling hisjigs, but you can get him to build you Ss' & Cs'. They're prestretched to 300# and then served. I can say once installed on the 1st shot the peep stays in the same position, from minus 20 C to +32C. I would suggest using the BCY 452X---you'll get an easy 2 years of 'hammering'. |
