Kinetic Energy for deer
The law in my state allows bows drawing only 30 lbs to be used for bowhunting. That still seems light to me--even with today' s greatly improved bows. What is the accepted amount of Kinetic Energy required to kill a deer? Does a 30 lbs bow make the grade?

RE: Kinetic Energy for deer
25 to 41 ft-lb (Deer, antelope, etc)
42 to 65 ft-lb Large Game (elk, black bear, wild boar) 65 ft-lb Toughest Game (cape buffalo. grizzly) |
RE: Kinetic Energy for deer
Well, if Dick_Cress is right, I should be able to punch holes through dinosaurs. I will be getting roughly 78 foot pounds of KE with 0.5400372 lb-second of momentum. All this comming at around 290 f.p.s....... Man., I can' t wait to take my bow out hunting :D

Throw a shoulder blade in the mix and those #' s are useless.
My bad, not yours... Buck magnet, I' m with ya. What was the total weight of your new arrows? |

RE: Kinetic Energy for deer
The Indians killed buffalo with longbows. What' s the KE on an old longbow?...probably not much. Just depends on how many arrows you want to use.:D Dick' s numbers seem true to me though.

419 grains at 290 sounds good to me. I think that would put me in ICS 340 land.
Thanks. |
