Whats the easiest way to sight in a new bow?
 

I know this has been asked before, but i didnt feel like looking through the posts[:'(]

I was wondering what the easiest way to sight in my bow with a new sight would be?

Start close, get your top pin dialed in first. Remember to "follow" the arrow with your pin. Also before that, make sure your bow is properly tuned.

+1, start at 10yds or so, eyeball everything to make sure it looks "in-line," and shoot a little, "Chase/follow the arrow," meaning if you're hitting HIGH, Move the pin UP, and hitting LEFT, move the pin LEFT. Once you get a pin sighted in, I'd recommend moving back to 20yds or so and re-zeroing that pin, you should only have to move it down a little, then try a walk-back tune, and a BH tune. Be Patient, and if you get frustrated, put the bow away and try it again the next day!!! Best advice I can give you.

Even at 10 yds you can miss a target and10 yds would be the highest point of your arrow's arc at 20 yds. Therefore, if yousight the pin on at 10 you will be low at 20. You'd be better off sighting the 20 at 6 or 7 yds.

Depending on the sight you may not want to start with your 20 yd pin. For example, G5 recommends you start with your 50 and then set your 20 if you have one with the floating pin. You can get your 50 close by sighting that pin in at3 or 4 ydsyds. 3 or 4 yds being the first place your arrow would cross a straight line from your eye to the target. 50 being the second point and your target. This will also help get your left to right corrected and also start the process.You can probably get the 50, 40, 30 & 20 close by starting at 4 yds, then going to 5, 6, & 7.

The thread title says it all. EASIEST!!! And G5 may recommend that, but I'd seriously doubt many guys do it that way.

You can disagree with me if you'd like. I've been shooting a bow for almost 30 yrs and sighting in at 10 yds is not a good idea. With the new sights that allow gang adjustment vertically and horizontally setting all pins using tape and then sighting in at 3 or 4 yds with the 50 yard pin is much easier than trying to shoot an out of box bow at 10 yds. You can easily miss a target at that range with a bow that is way off.

P.S. Typing in large color letters doesn't make one point more correct then mine.

I'd like to expand and clarify why it would be easier to do what I've stated. This works for sights with gang adjustment and is much easier than starting with the 20 yd pin close up. Why? If you sight in the 20 yd pin first at close range youwill be re sighting as you move back to 20 yds. Furthermore, if the bow is not tuned you will be re sighting after tuning. You also have the possibility of being way off the target or even missing it at 10 yds if the sight is way off and you will get frustrated and ticked off very fast.

So you take a new bow. First make sure your tuning is close using paper. While I'm not a paper tuning guy it is a good way to at least get a bow close before proper tuning (walk back or French tuning). If your tuning is off and you sight in a bow you will be re sighting it later on.

Then use either a sight tape or something from a website and set the pin gaps based on your bow's speed.

Then sight in either the 50 yd pin (or 40 of that's the furtherest you have) at 3-4 yds by using the gang adjustment on the rest.
This serves 2 purposes.First, you are close to the target and will be able to get zeroed in easily and quickly. Second, you are getting the bow ready for proper tuning. You want to be hitting an eraser sized target at this range.

If you've used a sight tape the rest of your pins will be very close. You can now go to 20 yds and I'd bet that bow will not be off more than 2 inches max and you can now easily perform individual minor vertical adjustments on each pin.

Now you can tune the bow with either walk back or French tuning and be done with all of that in a lot less timethen it would take to start with the 20.

Davepjr71 - I really like the sounds of this method could you tell me what you would do for sighting in at 60-50-40-30? And should all of those be shot at 3-4 yards first?
