best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
Does anyone have an opinion on the best combo of vane and fixed blade broadheads? I'm running some test on G5 striker fixed heads and a combination of Blazer, AAE Maxhunter and Quick spin ST speed hunters. I have 6 arrows with each of the 3 vanes fletched with 3 vanes and 4 vanes. I've shot a little bit and I'm impressed with the results of the 4 vane quick spins and blazers....suprised they aren't dropping blow those with 3 vanes. I'll post my results at some point but it's going to take some time....has to be extensive shooting for me to be convinced.

My opinion only:
I've tried almost all the vanes out there, and Blazers are the best for me. |
RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
My non-technical expert opinion is this…..
The better your bow is tuned, less fletch needed The smoother your release, less fletch needed. The slower your bow, les fletch needed The smaller and more aerodynamic the broadhead, …..you get the picture. I’m no technical wizard but I had Thunderhead 125’s shooting perfect to 50-60 yds with only 3” regular vanetec vanes. Granted my bow was only going 265 fps. I think the big place left where fletching becomes more & more critical is if you are shooting a BIG fixed blade head at higher speeds. With almost any of the new small heads out there now, and a finely tuned setup, you can get away with almost any fletching combo out there and be fine in a hunting situation. |
RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I have shot them all Quick Spin, Duravanes and Blazers were the best I have shot.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
i personally have had the best luck with the blazers for fixed blade broadheads.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I shoot full length arrows (32") and fexed blade heads, and blazers are the best I have found too, even better than a 4" helical. I've shot heads up to Muzzy Phantoms, which are about as big as they come, and they fly very well with the Blazers.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I wasn't totally satisfied with Blazers and I experimented with using four vanes also. They dropped no more than ones with three vanes but they flew better. I thought that they were noisier but I found a solution that worked great, I moved twoopposing vanes 1" forward on the arrow so that the vanes were staggered. Blazers are tall vanes and I was having some clearance issues, I've since switched to 3.125" QuickSpins and they work great with broadheads. You can get good deals on them on E-bay.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
Ebay...good to know those quick spins are expensive. I'm about half way with my testing. I've done 4-2" blazers, 4 quick spin speed hunters and the 3-2" blazers at 25/35/45 yds with G5 striker 100 grain broadheads. What I have found so far is the 4-2" blazers are a bit tighter than the other two...I'll post the pictures when done but the most consistant thing I found is those G5 striker are awesome....If you haven't you need to pick up a 3 pack to see what I'm talking about....very nice.

It's all about the drag......
More fletches means more drag. You can get similar results by increasing your offset or adding helical. While you don't get much helical on a 2" blazer, it is enough to gain some extra stabilization without the weight or clearance issues of adding another fletch. |
RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
Have you tested the flex fletch fast vanes yet? Or the Flex fletch 360 vanes yet?
I put ona dozenFF fast vaneswith right helical and they are right there with the blazer 2" broadhead vanes in my humble opinion. I'd guess they might be quieter and definitely lighter so your FOC is a bit better. |

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I've had good luck with Slick Trick standard heads and Blazers @ 277-279 fps.
I also have tuned the Slick Trick 85 with 3'' feathers at 315 fps, hit with my field points at 30 yards. That's two recent combinations that have worked for me from a paper tuned bow. |
RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
Feathers. Real feathers.
I messed with some of the blazers and tried four... and the four fletched arrow didn't fly worth a crap... I could probaby throw one straighter. Three fletched either straight or helical work extremely well, and they are very durable... so if you don't want to mess with real feathers... I'd point you toward Blazers. |

ORIGINAL: The Rev My opinion only: I've tried almost all the vanes out there, and Blazers are the best for me. I agree 100% with Rev (which is hard to do;):D). Ive tried all of them and Blazers blow the comp away. Blazers are the most durable and stablize the arrow real well. Ive got arrows that are going on their 4th+ animal. All pass throughs and the vanes are as good as new. I know a lot of people like quick spin, but I simply hate them. They are loud and not durable at all. They will also cause you to lose velocity and cause your arrow to drop more at distances just beyond 20 yards. I cronied arrows with quick spins and compared them to others. Quick spin were by far the slowest. And if you stand down range from the shooter, they are very loud. I feel they are a gimic that was ment to be a quick fix for a poor tuned bow. I would also stay away from the expensive string silencer brand or what ever they are called. Theyare nothing but a gimic. They work just as well as any cheapplastic 4" vane. When I cronied several arrows with different fletching, all were three vane configuration with similartwist. I didquick spins with hylical and without, and both sucked. Here is whatI found; Blazerswere the fastest by far; second were 4" plastic vanes (duravan here as well, duravan was a good durable vane, i liked them); 4"feathers just a bit slower than vanes but not enough to be a concern; then quick spins. If you go trad, feathers all the way. Turkey feathers are the best. I even use 5" feathers with some of my bows. |

Oh thanks buddy... I'm going to have to tell Rocky on you...:D:D |

I am shooting the 2" Quick Spin ST vanes and like them so far with Slick Trick 100 Grain Magnum heads.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I tested the G5 striker 100 grain head with 1 1/8" cut, vanes were offset as far as the Bitz will allow it to gowithout it falling offthe shaft. I was pretty impressed as to what this G5will do. I've only been at it about2 yrs but I shoot quite a bit at least as much as the kids allow.... I took 10 shots each set up at 25, 35 and 45 yds at a standard 5 spot indoor target.I score anything in the whiteX 5 pts, next whitering 4 pts and the blue rings were 3 and 2 pts, a miss was a big fat zero.I personally liked the 4 vane config the best...any of these set ups worked well. I will testthe QS3 and the Max Hunter 3 too soon. The scores are above each picture of the target starting with the blazer 3. I did NOT move my field tip sight at all...I think the max hunter would have done much better, did shoot majority to the right and you have to take pilot error in there too. I will say the Max Hunter is easier to fletch than the blazer or QS.

Blazer vanes work fine for me.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I've tried Quick Spins and Blazers. I've found that with my setup, the quickspins appeared a bit faster and grouped a bit better. Now, with a different setup, realize this might not be the case. Also, I think the quick spins are a bit nicer to look at than the blazers because of the writing on the vanes, this might also have something to do with what "appeared" to be a better performance. I fletch all my arrows with quick spins.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I have shot Blazers for a few years, getting pretty good results. Last year, I tried the Quickspin ST hunters. I think they work a little better, but individual groups/days, etc. are pretty hard to compare and judge. I would compare the STs with an offset to Blazers with a full helical. I decided to try an experiment with STs vs. FOBs. Shot some this week, and so far, the STs are doing as well or better. They are putting my broadheads with field points out to 40 yards, and I don't bother shooting much farther. I don't use a peep, since it causes problems in low light for my older eyes. Groups with STs have been under 2" at 20, 3" at 30, etc. The FOB arrows seem to shoot low for some reason. I am not getting contact, I checked for that. Maybe I'm pressing against the FOB with my face or something. Pretty hard to do a test like this without a Hooter Shooter or at least some Pro-like shooting skills.

RE: best vanes combo for fixed blade broadheads
I shoot 4 inch duravanes through a WB (B2) without any problems and my vanes don't get wrinkled or torn up. Probably has alot to do with my setup though. 60lbs, 2215's and 125gr. muzzy 3 blades with a 27 inch arrow and 27.25 in. draw out of a Bear Instinct.

Hi, I have tried a lot of arrow vanes and found a few arrow vanes that are best for hunting and normal use as well some of them are
Bohning Blazer Bohning 2.25-Inch Q2i Fusion X-II I hope you will like my these arrow vanes recommendations for any questions or issues you can always contact me. |
Wow, a 12 year thread resurrection. A little late to be answering the OP's question, I think.
