Down range velocity
Everytime we all get into teh topic of velocity the speed at the string is always listed and people say that what matters is your down range velocity so who cares what it is at the string. However, my thoughts on this is that if your bow is fast at the string it will still be fast down range at hunting distances. So, I decided to record my speeds at the bow, 20 yds, 30 yds, & 40 yds with a 430 gr arrow. Only a 20 fps loss at 40 yds is not too shaby. I'm going t obuild a heavier and see how well it maintains the speed. However, I see no reason to go heavier with my arrow when it still has more momentum at 40 yds then a lot of heavier set-ups will at the bow.
bow: 303 fps 20 yds: 296 fps 30 yds:290 fps 40 yds:284 fps |
RE: Down range velocity
Thats pretty good dave, I think that is enough to take down anything in north america. Ive only played out to 20 yards or so with my chrono. I might have to play a bit more since I got my 82nd. It is flat out fast.

RE: Down range velocity
Thanks Dave. I put the speed mods on and picked up almost 10 fps over the how it was after adjusting the STS. The fun part was shooting through the chrono at 40 yds after taking a month and a half of shooting off due to a back surgery.
Maybe next year I may get a new toy. The Ally just shoots so good and fast that I can't see giving it any time soon. |
RE: Down range velocity
I had to get somthing to keep up with my buddies x force. I think my 82nd is just as good shooting as my old allegiance, or a new one. Just all depends on the shooter though.

RE: Down range velocity
From what year Ally are those figures?
Thanks, Kevin |
RE: Down range velocity
I believe he has an 07 ally kwilson, I could be wrong but most of them are pretty close in speeds.

RE: Down range velocity
It is an '07 with the speed mods on. I picked up over 10 fps swapping out the stock string/cables and adjusting the STS with my smooth mods and close to another 10 with the speed mods.

RE: Down range velocity
Everytime we all get into teh topic of velocity the speed at the string is always listed and people say that what matters is your down range velocity so who cares what it is at the string. With out initial velocity there is no down range velocity. |
RE: Down range velocity
I agree with you bigbulls. I guess their point is that lighter arrows loose velocity faster so therefore willslower down range that the initial speed means nothing. This is obviously not true.
