Arrow length
 

I have a question regarding arrow length. My nephew just got his new Hoyt Katera and traded in a Ultra-Sport. He is using a Whisper Biscuit rest and has a 30" draw length. I watched him shoot today and noticed I could cut 3.5" off his arrows and still have about 1.25" of shaft past the biscuit. He is shooting Gold-Tip Hunter XT with a 75/95 spine and a 100 gr fieldpoint or broadhead. Will it be ok to cut off this much shaft and will he really gain anything from it? Thanks. Terry.

If the arrow is sticking 4.75" past the rest I would say he NEEDS to cut off some length. He will gain some speed from it too.

Cutting the arrow back is going to stiffen the spine so he might have to go to a heavier head to keep the spine right for the bow etc.

If his draweight is near 60lbs or better you will probably be doing him a favor. Not only will you arrows be straighter (most carbon arrows get pretty wild at the ends) but the spine will acually be close to what he needs. If he is shooting closer to 50lbs or less it might now be such a great idea, athough slighly stiff shafts seem to shoot better than weaker ones through the WB.

I shoot my arrows with 2 inch less than my draw length. My draw is 30 so my arrows are 28.

How does the bow shoot for him? If he doesn't have any tuning issues and it shoots broad heads well I honestly wouldn't mess with it. You can make an arrow shorter, but you can't make it longer again;). Give all his specs for his bow and have someone here run the numbers in one of the archery programs and see how those arrows spine for that set up. If they are two long someone can tell you about how much to cut off.
